Book Description
Poetry has been a way of expressing the inner feelings I've had about my unusual life. I was disfigured as an infant by a burning kerosene lamp, resulting in years of reconstructive surgery and a life apart from my family, being adopted by cousins. I feel like the phoenix that rises from the flames. The Stare What hurts one so about a stare.. The look that puts one on a pin, That stabs your heart without a care So curious lust is satisfied With rape of eyes that probes each pore,Intruding with relentlessness, The questioning that crawls like worms Over every inch of skin? You want to run away and hide; Instead you sit there, humbly, sore, Aching with defenselessness. It's you the victim, you who squirms, Yours the deficiency, the sin. The animal instincts serve us yet, The pecking order still is here. The rational mind makes us forget How thin indeed the polite veneer. Anniversary Song These were the happiest years I've lived, The seven we've been together. The storms were fewAnd in between Was a rainbow of life, Every hueOf fun and joy and calm delight...So many moments I know not whether could choose the best For comparison would beggar The richness and warmth of all the rest. We've drunk from a cup so full That few there are that know its measure. These poems reflect my inner life, its moments of inspiration and occasional despair "but of such is life in its fullest measure." (quote from "Realization").

Phoenix

Phoenix PDF Author: Deck d'Arcy
Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0847864839
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
The first book from the French band Phoenix, who helped define the sound of an era. With one foot in the French electronic music sound of the late 1990s and the other in the world of indie Rock, Phoenix have evolved from an edgy French band to one of the most influential and beloved indie acts of the last twenty years. The book draws on the band's personal archives, including photography of everything from their instruments to the notebooks in which every lyric and chord change were carefully notated. Accompanying this is an oral history of the Phoenix's journey in their own words. The book is a superfan's chronicle of the evolution of a band. Published to coincide with a series of anniversaries for the band -- thirty years since their formation as teenagers in 1989; twenty since the release of their debut record in 1999; and ten since Grammy Award-winning Best Alternative Album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, in 2009 -- and with original interviews conducted with the band throughout, this book is an intimate celebration of a group whose particular brand of indie rock has struck a chord on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Description
A young violin prodigy grows up in Harbin and Shanghai amidst the absurd and often deadly politics of mid-century China. Under the dual influences of her revolutionary parents and the White Russian intellectuals who are her tutors (and who provide her with a link, personal and tragic, to the composer Dmitri Shostakovich) she is drawn into a precarious world of ideology and espionage where music must serve not only ‘the masses’, but also the unpredictable whims and grand strategies of great leaders. Moving between China, Europe and New Zealand, the young protagonist learns how music and its artefacts link individuals across time in a chain alternately transcendent and tragic, and encounters the compromises that talent, fate and family force upon her.

A Mythological Approach to Exploring the Origins of Chinese Civilization

A Mythological Approach to Exploring the Origins of Chinese Civilization PDF Author: Shuxian Ye
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811930961
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 518

Book Description
Is the lion the symbol of China? Or should it be the dragon or the phoenix? This book makes a provocative interpretation of the Chinese ancient totems such as the bear and the owl. Taking a mythological approach, it explores the origin of Chinese civilization using the quadruple evidence method, which integrates ancient and unearthed literature, oral transmission, and archeological objects and graphs. It testifies to the authenticity of unresolved ancient myths and legends from the origins of Chinese Jade Ware (6200BC-5400 BC) to the names of the Yellow Emperor (2698–2598 BC) and the legends from the Xia (2010BC-1600BC), Shang (1600BC-046BC), Zhou (1046BC-771BC), and Qin (221BC-206BC) Dynasties. The book lays the foundation for a reconstruction of Chinese Mythistory. With well over 200 photographs of historic artifacts, the book appeals to both researchers and general readers.

Songs for Two Voices

Songs for Two Voices PDF Author: Bruce Smith
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Men
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Part ancient Greek chorus, part Southern Baptist revival, Songs for Two Voices is an explosive showcase for Bruce Smith's jazz-like variations on sonnets and couplets, offering twenty-five duets: poems of call and response, song and countersong. In poems that groove and break, shimmy and dance, Smith filters his Miles Davis-like riffs through a post-World War II American sensibility to deliver verse without platitudes. As Smith's speakers wander through the detritus of American materialism-encountering jazz, football, drag, class war, Reaganomics, and Vietnam-the poems dramatize the contradictions and peculiarities of growing up male in Cold War America, both sensing promise and suffering disillusion. Each poem here speaks in two voices: one that attacks and one that cowers, one voice that leads while the other follows. But Smith's subjects are unencumbered by form, and their voices blossom in duet: the idealized lover is also a betrayer, the man is also a girl. These binaries of statement and contradiction give birth to a third voice in the unrealized possibilities of the two. A mesmerizing follow-up to 2000's The Other Lover, Smith's Songs for Two Voices is carnal yet fiercely intellectual, laid out with the self-confidence of a poet who can invoke Mozart and Coltrane, Anna Akhmatova and John Wayne, Teddy Roosevelt and Augustine in the same incendiary breath.
