Book Description
One of the foremost figures of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century, John Stuart Mill offered up examinations of human rights, personal and societal rights and responsibilities, and the striving for individual happiness that continue to impact our philosophies, both private and political, to this day. In this comprehensive rebuttal to the thinking of a preeminent philosopher of his time-one now, ironically, best remembered for Mill's critique-Mill explains why Hamilton's views on the limitations of human knowledge were, to Mil's thinking, wrong, and in the process, lays out his own ideas on the freedom of human will. In this provocative volume is where we find Mill's doctrine of the "permanent possibility of sensation," which encompasses the mind's interaction with the external world. First published in 1865, this is a replica of the 1889 third edition, and will be of interest to students of Mill's philosophy, and to the development of philosophical thought in the 19th century. English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are Principles of Political Economy (1848), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).

The Correspondence of Thomas Reid

The Correspondence of Thomas Reid PDF Author: Thomas Reid
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 9780271022833
Category : History

Pages : 394

Book Description
Thomas Reid (1710&–1796) is now recognized as one of the towering figures of the Enlightenment. Best known for his published writings on epistemology and moral theory, he was also an accomplished mathematician and natural philosopher, as an earlier volume of his manuscripts edited by Paul Wood for the Edinburgh Reid Edition, Thomas Reid on the Animate Creation, has shown. The Correspondence of Thomas Reid collects all of the known letters to and from Reid in a fully annotated form. Letters already published by Sir William Hamilton and others have been reedited, and roughly half of the letters included appear in print for the first time. Writing in 1802, Reid's disciple and biographer Dugald Stewart doubted that Reid's correspondence &"would be generally interesting.&" This collection proves otherwise, for the letters illuminate virtually every aspect of Reid's life and career and, in some instances, provide us with invaluable evidence about activities otherwise undocumented in his manuscripts or published works. Through his correspondence we can trace Reid's relations with contemporaries such as David Hume and his colleagues at both King's College, Aberdeen, and the University of Glasgow, as well as his engagement with the most controversial philosophical, scientific, and political issues of his day. If anything, the letters assembled here serve as the starting point for understanding Reid and his place in the Enlightenment.
