Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, in depth, the attitudes of local clergy about the possibility of collaborating with social workers to provide support to families in keeping them out of the child protective services system. A semi-structured interview guide with open-ended questions was utilized as the data-collection instrument. Twelve in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted by the researcher, all in English. The sample was first recruited by contacting clergy leaders personally known to the researcher. The open-ended interviews gathered information pertaining to background of clergy, knowledge of social welfare laws, perceived challenges collaborating with social workers and possible future collaboration with social workers. Findings were consistent with previous research literature suggesting that churchgoers seek counsel from clergy for more than spiritual problems. Findings also supported literature in which respondents reported not receiving training on child welfare laws.
