Handwitten oath of office on verso is signed by Alexander Wells and the judge who administered the oath, Charles M. Creaner of the 5th Judicial District, in Sonora County on Jan. 10, 1854. The handwritten "Enclosing Commission" letter to A. Wells in San Francisco is signed by Deputy Secretary of State William H.R. Wood from Benicia, California and dated Jan. 3, 1854. The letter requests that Wells acknowledge the receipt of his commission and "forward the library fee of five dollars."
