Power to the People

Power to the People PDF Author: Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 1466893745
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 402

Book Description
A guided tour of a revolution in the making that promises to change our lives Global warming, rolling black outs, massive tanker spills, oil dependence: our profligate ways have doomed us to suffer such tragedies, right? Perhaps, but Vijay Vaitheeswaran, the energy and environment correspondent for The Economist, sees great opportunity in the energy realm today, and Power to the People is his fiercely independent and irresistibly entertaining look at the economic, political, and technological forces that are reshaping the world's management of energy resources. In it, he documents an energy revolution already underway--a revolution as radical as the communications revolution of the past decades. From the corporate boardroom of a Texas oil titan who denies the reality of global warming to a think tank nestled in the Rocky Mountains where a visionary named Amory Lovins is developing the kind of hydrogen fuel-cell technology that could make the internal combustion engine obsolete, Vaitheeswaran gamely pursues the people who hold the keys to our future. Man's quest for energy is insatiable. It is also essential. By avoiding the traditional binaries that pit free markets against the wisdom of conservation and the need for clean energy, Power to the People is a book that debunks myths without debunking hope.

Power to the People

Power to the People PDF Author: Stephen Shames
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1613122993
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
This pictorial history tells the story of the revolutionary Black Panther Party in the words of its co-founder, Bobby Seale. Coming toward the end of America’s epic Civil Rights Movement, the Black Panther Party was one of the most creative and influential responses to racism and inequality in American history. They advocated armed self-defense to counter police brutality, and initiated a program of patrolling the police with shotguns—and law books. In words and photographs, Power to the People explores the impact and achievements of this revolutionary organization. The words are Seale’s, with contributions by other former party members. The photographs are by Stephen Shames, the Panther’s most trusted documentarian. Power to the People is a testament to their warm association, combining Shames’s memorable images with Seale’s colorful in-depth commentary culled from many hours of conversation. Shames also interviewed major party figures for this volume, including Kathleen Cleaver, Elbert “Big Man” Howard, Ericka Huggins, Emory Douglas, and William “Billy X” Jennings. His photography is supplemented with Panther ephemera and graphic art.

Rethinking Utopia

Rethinking Utopia PDF Author: Ebru Deniz Ozan
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1666906964
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 133

Book Description
Rethinking Utopia is a collection that discusses utopian thinking in relation to different philosophical themes. It seeks utopianism in political theory (particularly in Kant and Derrida), populism, Turkish Islamism, international law, and it fleshes out themes of modernism and classless society in the selected utopian examples. By discussing and showing the relationship between utopia and these topics, the book shows that the range of subjects related to utopias is wider than the current literature suggests. The book attempts to bring together academic fields, which are not cross-fertilized in the existing debates on utopia, by building bridges between actual politics and futuristic visions. On the one hand, it looks at utopia as a means to think about and reconfigure contemporary politics (as in the case of international law and populist politics); on the other hand, it investigates how different philosophical/literary texts, from widely-known More and Le Guin to lesser-known Turkish Islamists Kısakürek, Karakoç and Özel, imagine their distinct utopian vision where a new form of anarchist, classless or Islamist society could be possible.

Power to the People

Power to the People PDF Author: Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135960704
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
First published in 2000. Why would Cuba, an isolated and impoverished country, be trying to develop a nuclear energy capability and why would it attempt to expand its energy generation capability when it can barely feed its population? This book seeks to clarify the risks and opportunities associated with the development and expansion of the Cuban energy sector. Once reliant on imported fossil fuels as well as Russia1s willingness to underwrite its energy development schemes, post-Cold War Cuba is now confronted with the daunting tasks of expanding its energy capabilities while simultaneously replacing its energy infrastructure. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Cuba, this book looks in depth at the economic, social, and political implications of what is rapidly becoming one of the next century1s most important public policy issues in Cuba.
