The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1
Author: James Bowden
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267718948
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 We have used the term murder, and used it advisedly; for the martyrdom of the three Friends on Boston Common had been perpetrated contrary to the laws of the realm. The charter of Massachusetts in no degree empowered the local authorities to enact laws contrary to the fundamental principles of English jurisprudence and English liberty. In pursuing their despotic course, they did so likewise with the consciousness that it was repulsive to the feelings of the community. Towards the close of 1660, this was so intelligibly manifested, that for a time they deemed it prudent to suspend the operation of the law for execut ing Friends, and thus the life of Joseph Nicholson was saved. Letters to a Friend - Written to Mrs. Ezra S. Carr 1866-1879
Author: John Muir
Publisher: Read Books Ltd
ISBN: 1473393647
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 107
Book Description
This vintage book contains a collection of letters written by John Muir to Ezra S. Carr. Whilst he was at university, Muir was a frequent caller at Carr’s house. She was a botanist and lover of nature whom Muir would come to consider his spiritual mother - he felt that Carr thoroughly understood and sympathised with him. His letters, mostly written from the Yosemite Valley, give a good indication to his sensitive spirit and the life he lived sheep-herding, guilding, and tending a sawmill. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in the life and mind of this great author, and it would make for a worthy addition to any personal library. John Muir (1838 - 1914) was a Scottish-American writer, naturalist, and pioneering advocate of American wilderness preservation. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition - complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
