Book Description
Who was Mary Magdalene? Saint or sinner? Preacher or penitent? Wife or whore? For two thousand years, this complex biblical figure has been the source of both devotion and debate as to her role in the spread of Christianity and the growth of the Church. When Mori St. Clair arrived in Paris to assemble a visual history of nursing mothers throughout Western civilization, she envisioned six tranquil months of roaming art galleries and puttering around libraries. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would face danger, forge friendships, or feel a man's love again. Nor did she think that one of the most controversial figures in the Christian church would reach out through the millennia and challenge her to tell the story that contradicted everything she thought she ever knew.

The Church of Mary Magdalene

The Church of Mary Magdalene PDF Author: Jean Markale
Publisher: Inner Traditions
ISBN: 9780892811991
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
An extensive examination of the religious anomalies and lost treasure of the Mary Magdalene Church in Rennes-le-Château • Looks at the connection between the Templars, Cathars, and other enigmatic groups in the history of this church and the surrounding area • Maintains that Mary Magdalene was the high priestess who anointed Jesus into his priesthood, in accordance with ancient religious tradition • Explores the role of the Sacred Feminine in early Christian Church history The small church of Rennes-le-Château, in a remote village in southern France, may well hold the key to the proof of Mary Magdalene’s marriage to Jesus and the bloodline they founded. In 1885 the village of Rennes-le-Château welcomed a new priest, Abbe Saunière, for its church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Abbe Saunière ordered very strange restoration work for the church, and it is thought that he discovered something during this renovation that brought him to the attention of the power brokers of that time and made him a very rich man. Possible identifications of his discovery range from the gold pillaged from Delphi in Roman times; the treasure brought out of Jerusalem by the Templars, who had a strong presence in this area; and the missing Cathar treasure, spirited out of Montségur mere days before the fall of that fortress. Yet even more curious and compelling is this church’s ambiguous portrayal of Mary Magdalene. Markale explains that the unusual depictions of Mary in the church hint at an even more archaic role performed by Mary that could shake the very foundations of the Church if it were fully understood: that of the high priestess who anoints the priest king into his spiritual duties.

Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque

Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004232249
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 489

Book Description
Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque examines the iconographic inventions in Magdalene imagery and the contextual factors that shaped her representation in visual art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Unique to other saints in the medieval lexicon, images of Mary Magdalene were altered over time to satisfy the changing needs of her patrons as well as her audience. By shedding light on the relationship between the Magdalene and her patrons, both corporate and private, as well as the religious institutions and regions where her imagery is found, this anthology reveals the flexibility of the Magdalene’s character in art and, in essence, the reinvention of her iconography from one generation to the next.
