Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament, Explained The Sacred Scriptures are the Word of God, written in a Divine way, and for a Divine purpose. The Divine Word contains messages from God, as a Spiritual Being, to men as spiritual beings. But, in order to bring down the truth to the apprehension of natural-minded men, spiritual truths must be presented in corresponding natural ideas, in natural imagery. "I, Jehovah, thy God, ... have also spoken by the prophets, and have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets." (Hosea xii. 9, 10.) Hence the Bible has a spirit and a body, between which there is the relation of correspondence, as inward and outward counterparts. The word "parable" is used in three senses, - I, as an enigma, or obscure saying; 2, as any figurative discourse; and 3, as a fictitious, but possible, narrative, invented to convey and illustrate a truth. The parables of the New Testament are strictly within the third class. But. on the same exact basis, there are very few parables in the Old Testament. And so, for the treatment of the parables of the Old Testament, the second definition is adopted, which includes, also, fables and visions. Every parable has at least three senses, - I, its narrative sense; 2, its figurative meaning, as applied to other natural persons and things; and 3, its spiritual meaning, illustrating principles operating in the mind. The system of interpretation here employed is that known as " The Science of Correspondences," made known to the Church through Emanuel Swedenborg. As it seemed best to have each explanation of a parable complete in itself, some repetition was unavoidable. Book Description
An exposition of forty-eight narratives of the Old Testament, which are in the form of parable, fable or vision. "Mr. Mitchell's admirable book on The Parables of the Old Testament.... is a book dealing with Bible subjects in a way calculated to be of considerable service, not only to the preacher (who is, of course, always willing to be helped), but also, and perhaps more especially, to the teacher, whether in the class, the school or the home. And to say this, is to indicate It as a book for which there Is a place, and a crying need, at the present moment. The explanations given are so arranged and presented as to render them easy of apprehension.... First, the narrative itself is given from the Word, and Immediately followed by a brief paragraph, little more than a sentence, summing up the general spiritual lesson, and striking a clear key-note, to which all the rest is attuned. This is, of itself, an invaluable lesson, in preparation. . . . After the key-note... we are presented with a short historical survey or summary of literal facts connected with the narrative, giving It the necessary time and place setting in our minds. From this section, which has Its own heading, we pass to the historical representative meaning, and thence to the spiritual significance, of the various characters, Incidents, or figures entering into the narrative. By means of these We are brought Into the general lesson In a more amplified form, with Illustrations and applications to dally life; and the whole Is brought to a fitting conclusion by some final assurance or appeal. This, with variations according to the nature of the subject, Is the order followed, throughout these studies; and It Is In the order of their presentation that their usefulness becomes so easily apparent. No one w1th any degree of Interest In Bible-teaching could fall to read the book with pleasure, or to find In it a store-house of material that Is full of suggestiveness." --Morning-Light (London, England).

Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament Of the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research; or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's "Notes on the Parables of the New Testament" one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic "teaching by comparison" which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked; and to bring out - what in these days it is especially necessary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect Revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Book Description
Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of Whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus The mode of teaching by parables is one of great antiquity. It was, as we have already seen, practiced under the Old Testament dispensation, and appears to have been very generally afterward adopted by the rabbis even down to the time of Christ. Its advantages are obvious. Experience has demonstrated that this sort of composition is better calculated to command attention, to captivate the imagination, to affect the heart, and to make deep and lasting impressions on the memory, than the most ingenious and most elegant discourses. Besides, the very obscurity in which para bles are sometimes involved has the effect of exciting a greater degree of curiosity and interest, and of urging the mind to a more vigorous exertion of its powers, than any other mode of instruction. There is some thing for the understanding to work upon, and when the concealed meaning is at length elicited, we are apt to value ourselves on the discovery, as the effect of our own penetration and discernment, and for that very rea son to pay more regard to the moral it conveys. Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied The aim of this work is not critical elucidation, but simple, practical explanation and application. The chapters are intended to be read, either privately, or in any of the various ways in which plain family sermons are found to be useful. In each parable the main scope has been regarded, rather than those more minute points, which, in many cases at least, must be looked on as mere accessories; nor has the author gone into those refinements of application in which an ingenious fancy is apt to indulge, but which often tend to draw away the mind from the great lesson intended to be taught. Long words and involved sentences have been avoided, and the authors aim has been to use great plainness of speech, in the earnest hope that the book may be of use to the poor and unlearned, as well as to those of more cultivated minds.
