Book Description
Excerpt from Open Air Crusaders: The Individuality of the Child Versus the System, Together With a Report of the Elizabeth McCormick Open Air Schools The greatest possibilities lie with the children. Roundly, twenty millions Of them are in the schools Of the country. They are spending one hundred million hours a day through the school year under the direction Of this definitely constituted public function, in the environment and under the conditions prescribed by the law. SO far, the only efficiency tests applied to measure the success Of this great undertaking have been those which gauge the ability Of the children to pass from one grade to the next in the series leading to the college. We do not know whether the school experience has increased or diminished bodily vigor or whether the use Of school time has done the most vital possible service in preparation for what lies ahead. The attention Of an increasing number Of people is focus ing on the large army Of children, somewhere between 53 and 70 per cent Of the total number the country over, who fall out Of school at or before the completion Of the grammar grades. Conspicuous in this group are those whose physical condi tion has stood in the way Of school progress and has rendered them incapable Of taking with profit the usual school regime. Book Description
Excerpt from Open Air Crusaders: A Report of the Elizabeth McCormick Open Air School, Together With a General Account of Open Air School Work in Chicago and a Chapter on School Ventilation Eskimo suits which were guaranteed to attract the attention and arouse the interest of the most indifferent reader. This definite demonstration of the remarkable effects which the fresh air treat ment brings about in sick children set people in general, fathers and mothers, as well as teachers and doctors, to wondering what would be the results of similar treatment upon well children. As a result of the general public interest, the Board of Education of the City of Chicago on December 29, 1909, voted to establish twenty open window rooms in the Graham school, where the experiment had been under way in two rooms since September. On September 10, 1910, orders came from the superintendent's office to open all the windows in all the public schools of the city at least three times a day. The twenty thousand windows were opened. Book Description
Excerpt from The Open-Air Nursery School This vivid book, like Mr. Alec Paterson's Across the Bridges, makes the reader see things which he ought to see, and know things which he ought to know. It gives the human side, which had to be portrayed too sparingly in Mr. Charles Booth's great work on the life and labour of the people of London. It is full of experience, insight and observation. For us, living to-day, it has a plain message of citizenship. For those who come after us it will have the value of history. How much we should learn from such a book, if Pestalozzi had had time to write it, about the orphans whom he fed and washed and taught at Stanz! Typical School Journeys

Typical School Journeys PDF Author: G. G. Lewis
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331167105
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
Excerpt from Typical School Journeys: A Series of Open-Air Geography and Nature Studies Poor Law Commissioners, Professors of Sociology, and Business Men all combine to urge that something more may be done in the day schools to rouse the children's interest and increase their resourcefulness. The school period is a short one in the lives of working people. Five hours a day on five days a week between the ages of five and thirteen exclusive of holidays do not give the teachers much chance. Hence it is, that alongside of this movement to modify the school curriculum, there are many suggestions for the better use of holidays and leisure time. Reformers urge that the school buildings and parks may be more frequently used for recreation, wisely directed by grown up playfellows, that children should be prepared for their country holidays so that their eyes may be opened to enjoy the beauties and wonders of nature; that holidays of weeks may be substituted for holidays of days, and, generally, that playtime may be made a growing time for both the minds and the bodies of the children. While such theories are being discussed, Mr. Lewis is one of the teachers who has been making experiments in what is possible. In the following pages he tells what he has done both during school and holiday time. It is a pleasure to me to commend his book. I am convinced by what I have seen of children on Hampstead Heath, or in Westminster Abbey, how much may be done in such places to impress the children's minds, and how great need there is that those who conduct the children should prepare themselves to teach.
