Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 908

Book Description
Nanostructures for Novel Therapy: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications focuses on the fabrication and characterization of therapeutic nanostructures, in particular, synthesis, design, and in vitro and in vivo therapeutic evaluation. The chapters provide a cogent overview of recent therapeutic applications of nanostructured materials that includes applications of nanostructured materials for wound healing in plastic surgery and stem cell therapy. The book explores the promise for more effective therapy through the use of nanostructured materials, while also assessing the challenges their use might pose from both an economic and medicinal point of view. This innovative look at how nanostructured materials are used in therapeutics will be of great benefit to researchers, providing a greater understanding of the different ways nanomaterials could improve medical treatment, along with a discussion of the obstacles that need to be overcome in order to guarantee widespread availability. - Outlines how the characteristics of nanostructures made from different materials gives particular properties that can be successfully used in therapeutics - Compares the properties of different nanostructures, allowing medicinal chemists and engineers to select which are most appropriate for their needs - Highlights new uses of nanostructures within the therapeutic field, enabling the discovery of new, more effective drugs

Small Molecule Drug Discovery

Small Molecule Drug Discovery PDF Author: Andrea Trabocchi
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128183500
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
Small Molecule Drug Discovery: Methods, Molecules and Applications presents the methods used to identify bioactive small molecules, synthetic strategies and techniques to produce novel chemical entities and small molecule libraries, chemoinformatics to characterize and enumerate chemical libraries, and screening methods, including biophysical techniques, virtual screening and phenotypic screening. The second part of the book gives an overview of privileged cyclic small molecules and major classes of natural product-derived small molecules, including carbohydrate-derived compounds, peptides and peptidomimetics, and alkaloid-inspired compounds. The last section comprises an exciting collection of selected case studies on drug discovery enabled by small molecules in the fields of cancer research, CNS diseases and infectious diseases. The discovery of novel molecular entities capable of specific interactions represents a significant challenge in early drug discovery. Small molecules are low molecular weight organic compounds that include natural products and metabolites, as well as drugs and other xenobiotics. When the biological target is well defined and understood, the rational design of small molecule ligands is possible. Alternatively, small molecule libraries are being used for unbiased assays for complex diseases where a target is unknown or multiple factors contribute to a disease pathology. - Outlines modern concepts and synthetic strategies underlying the building of small molecules and their chemical libraries useful for drug discovery - Provides modern biophysical methods to screening small molecule libraries, including high-throughput screening, small molecule microarrays, phenotypic screening and chemical genetics - Presents the most advanced chemoinformatics tools to characterize the structural features of small molecule libraries in terms of chemical diversity and complexity, also including the application of virtual screening approaches - Gives an overview of structural features and classification of natural product-derived small molecules, including carbohydrate derivatives, peptides and peptidomimetics, and alkaloid-inspired small molecules

Peptide Self-Assembly

Peptide Self-Assembly PDF Author: Bradley L. Nilsson
Publisher: Humana
ISBN: 9781493978090
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This volume details methods and protocols on b-sheet assemblies and collagen. Divided into three parts chapters focus on expanding use of solid-state NMR as a powerful method to enhance structural understanding of self-assembled peptide materials, methods for the design, synthesis, and application of self-assembled peptide materials, and structural and mechanistic analyses of pathological amyloid systems that provide novel ways to assess function of the various possible aggregates as well to determine how the structure of these materials correlates to function/dysfunction in the biological context. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Peptide Self-Assembly: Methods and Protocols aims to capture modern methods that span the breadth of the exciting and expanding field of peptide self-assembly.

Advanced Photon Counting

Advanced Photon Counting PDF Author: Peter Kapusta
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319156365
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
This volume focuses on Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC), a powerful tool allowing luminescence lifetime measurements to be made with high temporal resolution, even on single molecules. Combining spectrum and lifetime provides a “fingerprint” for identifying such molecules in the presence of a background. Used together with confocal detection, this permits single-molecule spectroscopy and microscopy in addition to ensemble measurements, opening up an enormous range of hot life science applications such as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and measurement of Förster Resonant Energy Transfer (FRET) for the investigation of protein folding and interaction. Several technology-related chapters present both the basics and current state-of-the-art, in particular of TCSPC electronics, photon detectors and lasers. The remaining chapters cover a broad range of applications and methodologies for experiments and data analysis, including the life sciences, defect centers in diamonds, super-resolution microscopy, and optical tomography. The chapters detailing new options arising from the combination of classic TCSPC and fluorescence lifetime with methods based on intensity fluctuation represent a particularly unique highlight.

Electrosorption

Electrosorption PDF Author: Eliezer Gileadi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468417312
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
The gradual emergence during the last decade of the study of the mechanism of electrode reactions from the dark ages has given stimulus to a consideration of the double layer at metal-solution interfaces, which extends far outside the classical experimental studies of the capacitance of the mercury solution interface made during the 1950's by D. C. Grahame at Amherst College, Massachusetts. The central aspect of the study of an electrode reaction is the elucidation of its path and rate-determining step. Two fields are, however, prerequisites for such studies. First, it must be known what species are in the bulk of the solution, for these will seldom be simple ones such as H30~ and this study ("complex ions") has been made with both extent and depth. Second, the occupancy of the surface of the electrocatalyst and the associated field gradients must be known as a function of position in the double layer. Such "maps of the double layer" can be given with reasonable certainty up to concentrations of about 1 N for mercury in contact with solutions of inorganic ions. However, this is-or was until very recently-the extent of the know ledge. The problems confronting a fundamental approach to the rational development of, e.g., fuel cell catalysis were therefore considerable.
