Book Description
During the Harlem Renaissance, several literary periodicals encouraged African American women to submit poetry, short stories, essays, or other literary contributions for publication. Opportunity magazine was one such periodical that made immeasurable contributions to the careers of many female African American writers. This anthology collects all of the short stories published in Opportunity by African American women during the magazine's 25 years of publication. It includes works by both well-known authors (Zora Neale Hurston, Marita Bonner) and more obscure writers. There is also an additional African tale translated by Violette de Mazia, a white woman known for promoting African American art. It also includes an introduction which contextualizes the short stories historically in light of the overall development of African American writing.

Pages : 356

Book Description
“Stories that hit your heart, your sense of whimsy and your memories of different times - – writing about the south of the fifties in a nostalgic and loving way - with the touch of darkness.” In the first tale, Going Home, a small-time hoodlum, being led to the electric chair, remembers he has a few things he wants to do before he leaves this earth. In Boone, an eight-year-old tells the poignant story of an aging, crippled farmer who has a psychotic love for his wife. Two social misfits risk it all to love an unwanted child in For Love of Daniel. Cousins Billy and Roy, constantly spying on tenants of their grandmother’s rental houses, bite off more than they can chew in the haunting Gothic tale Annie. Alma Dawson’s life is turned upside down in The Agreement when she tries to raise money to pay for her daughter’s last year of college. In The Surrogate, a young woman conspires with her uncle to commit murder. A dying ten-year-old takes revenge on his tormentor in Serpentus Saragossii. In the suspenseful Tembo Makaburi, karma catches up with a greedy, arrogant big game hunter. In the final novella, The Angel Years, the Johnsons get an unexpected visitor while trying to protect a family secret. “I will add John Isaac Jones to my list of must-read southern authors!”

Now in her early twenties she finds out a couple of important things about this gift of hers. First, all the women in her family have had this gift, too, to one degree or another. That includes her mother and her great Aunt Nancy (really her cousin) who was Nancy Drew (who happens to be dead.) She also finds out that she can actually talk with her great aunt. That’s right, Nancy is a ghost with some unusual powers. Together they find stuff and solve crimes. Becky has a typical twenty-something’s life going on, including an active sex life. She lives amongst some other laid-back people in a trailer park in Ocean Beach, California. One group a local motorcycle club, the Rascals live down the hill, some of them she has known all her life. Tall Paul and Infamous Jack hire Becky to do her sleuthing and solve the mystery of the O.B. Massacre. Being the free spirit she is, Rebecca agrees to work for the Rascals. That mystery is what really happened to more than a dozen young men who seemed to disappear into thin air? Do the Rascals actually know the answer to this puzzle? Is Becky being played as a dup?
