Dayton Aircraft Cabin Fire Model, Version 3. Volume 1. Physical Description

Dayton Aircraft Cabin Fire Model, Version 3. Volume 1. Physical Description PDF Author: Charles D. MacArthur
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Airplanes
Languages : en
Pages : 57

Book Description
Version 3 of the Dayton Aircraft cabin Fire Model (DACFIR) has been created as a refinement and generalization of earlier mathematical models for the computer simulation of fire growth in the cabin of a commercial transport airplane. The model uses data from laboratory tests on the cabin furnishing materials and a zone (control volume) representation of the cabin atmosphere to predict the accumulation of heat, smoke, and gases resulting from arbitrary ignition sources specified in the program input. The major improvements included in Version 3 are a revised cabin atmosphere model which allows for multiple compartments and the prescribed entry of exterior fire gases, and an implicit numerical integration technique for the atmosphere equations. Volume I of this report contains a full description of the model's predictions to the results of three full-scale cabin fire tests. Volume II consists of appendices which include a user's guide and listing of the computer code. (Author).

The Numerical Simulation of Aircraft Evacuation and Its Application to Aircraft Design and Certification

The Numerical Simulation of Aircraft Evacuation and Its Application to Aircraft Design and Certification PDF Author: Matthew Owen

Book Description
Computer based mathematical models describing the aircraft evacuation process have a vital role to play in the design and development of safer aircraft, in the implementation of safer and more rigorous certification criteria and in cabin crew training and post-mortem accident investigation. As the risk of personal injury and costs involved in performing large-scale evacuation experiments for the next generation 'Ultra high capacity aircraft' (UHCA) are expected to be high, the development and use of these evacuation modelling tools may become essential if these aircraft are to prove a viable reality. This paper described the capabilities and limitations of the airEXODUS evacuation model and some attemps at validation, including its successful application to the prediction of a recent certification trial, prior to the actual trial taking place. Also described is a newly defined performance parameter known as OPS that can be used as a measure of evacuation trial optimality. In addition, sample evacuation simulations in the presence of fire atmospheres are described.

Numerical Calculations of Turbulent Buoyant Flow in Aircraft Cabins

Numerical Calculations of Turbulent Buoyant Flow in Aircraft Cabins PDF Author: K. T. Yang

Pages : 54

Book Description
The UNDSAFE computer code is utilized to study the spread of fire and smoke in aircraft cabins due to fires located in the cabin floor. A simulation study is first made based on expected data to establish the equivalence between two-dimensional and three-dimensional parameters including fire distribution and shape, the doorway height, and level of turbulence and also the effects of these parameters on the fire and smoke spread. The computer code is then used to simulate the spread of fire and smoke in a wide-body aircraft cabin with and without seats for two different scenarios of the fire location. The results show the dramatic effects of the seats on the flow, temperature, and smoke concentration behaviors inside the cabin. Important parameters have been identified such as the seat back height and the configuration of the seat bottom, closed or open. (Author).
