Book Description
The II Amendment and gun control are problems that affect many aspects of our lives: they are political, economic, criminal, social, juridical, but also ethical. The purpose of this book is to look at how, starting with the Second Amendment, the United States developed a firearms culture unlike any other country on the planet. In this book, I will show how gun control is the greatest contradiction in American society. In an era when citizens' rights were not taken for granted, the Bill of Rights was enacted to limit the power of the Central Government to prevent tyranny. Today, these amendments seem obsolete and do not fit in today's world. Reality changes quickly, and laws should keep up with societal changes. However, in modern, fast-paced, innovative America, politics, the economy, and society are still regulated by-laws from the distant past. The II Amendment gives the right to bear arms if the person is part of a militia that acts in defense of the State. The United States has the world's most powerful and well-equipped army. According to official government data, its budget exceeds 600 billion dollars, with 1.5 million active personnel. It's natural to wonder why the American people need to join a small militia when there's a massive army ready to fight for their country. Americans share beliefs that make life truly valuable and live as though it will never end. These people accept gun violence and deaths in video games and TV shows and their everyday lives. So, in reality, people enjoy and attempt to preserve life like in America. Still, they do not respect gun violence enough to abolish it entirely. However, it is one of their country's first obstacles to a long and healthy life.

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: This study is concerned with the historical development of the Second Amendment and how it is interpreted today. In doing so, John Vile's "A Companion to the United States Constitution and its Amendments" and Adam Winkler's "Gun Fight" have been consulted to provide background information on the history of the Second Amendment. Due to the fact that this term paper also deals with current statistics on gun control laws, it also relied on online research and online publications. Firstly, there will be a chapter that deals with the original intent of the founding fathers, who framed the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. It will provide an historical overview of the creation of the Second Amendment and what led to its inclusion into the Bill of Rights. It further tries to explain the founder's interpretation of the Second Amendment with regards to the militia. The third chapter will focus on the question of how the National Rifle Association was able to rewrite the Second Amendment in order to gain more profit and get support for gun rights. The chapter will present the approach taken by the NRA that resulted in a new interpretation of the Second Amendment and established the perception of an individual right to possess firearms within American society. It will take into account the Supreme Court cases of "United States v. Miller" of 1939 and "District of Columbia v. Heller" of 2008, that ultimately guaranteed an individual's right to own firearms without any connection to a militia. Another chapter will focus on gun control laws and provide a comparison between the United States and other developed countries. Furthermore, this chapter will give an insight into the perception of the Second Amendment within American society and discusses current gun control policies. Finally, the last paragraph of this term paper will be a conclusion, which sums up the results achieved and gives an outlook for future research on the Second Amendment and gun control laws.

The Second Amendment and Gun Control

The Second Amendment and Gun Control PDF Author: Kevin Yuill
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351783335
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
The Second Amendment, by far the most controversial amendment to the US Constitution, will soon celebrate its 225th anniversary. Yet, despite the amount of ink spilled over this controversy, the debate continues on into the 21st century. Initially written with a view towards protecting the nascent nation from more powerful enemies and preventing the tyranny experienced during the final years of British rule, the Second Amendment has since become central to discussions about the balance between security and freedom. It features in election contests and informs cultural discussions about race and gender. This book seeks to broaden the discussion. It situates discussion about gun controls within contemporary debates about citizenship, culture, philosophy and foreign policy as well as in the more familiar terrain of politics and history. It features experts on the Constitution as well as chapters discussing the symbolic importance of Annie Oakley, the role of firearms in race, and filmic representations of armed Hispanic girl gangs. It asks about the morality of gun controls and of not imposing them. The collection presents a balanced view between those who favour more gun controls and those who would prefer fewer of them. It is infused with the belief that through honest and open debate the often bitter cultural divide on the Second Amendment can be overcome and real progress made. It contains a diverse range of perspectives including, uniquely, a European perspective on this most American of issues.

Book Description
Discover the truth about the Second Amendment, the NRA, and the United States’ centuries-long fight over guns in this first-of-its-kind book for middle grade readers. "A compelling, clear analysis of one of our country’s oldest dilemmas: how to balance gun rights with public safety. It tells the full and true story of the Second Amendment, and points to a way to bring sanity to our gun laws. A remarkable primer for all ages." —Michael Waldman, author of The Second Amendment: A Biography For the majority of the United States’ history, the right to own a gun belonged to a “well regulated militia.” That changed in 2008 with the historic District of Columbia v. Heller case, which ruled that the Second Amendment protected an individual’s right. In the years since, the debate over gun legislation has reached a crescendo. And the issue grows ever relevant to children across America, with an estimated three million exposed to shootings every year. From metal detectors to see-through backpacks to shooting drills, kids face daily reminders of the threat of guns. Hana Bajramovic's Whose Right Is It? The Second Amendment and the Fight Over Guns reveals how a once obscure amendment became the focus of daily heated debate. Filled with historical photos and informative graphics, the book will show young readers how gun legislation has always been a part of American history and how money, power, and systemic racism have long dictated our ability to own guns. A Junior Library Guild Selection "Hana Bajramovic provides readers with a compelling overview on the history of guns in the United States and the changing, conflicting interpretations of the Second Amendment certain to stimulate conversation and thinking on the part of future generations." —Award-winning author Doreen Rappaport

The Right to Bear Arms PDF Author: Robert J. Spitzer
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 157607501X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
An objective examination of the Second Amendment, focusing on the intentions of its authors, its evolution from America's beginnings to the present, and the views expressed by the courts. In The Right to Bear Arms: Rights and Liberties under the Law, the first volume in ABC-CLIO's America's Freedoms series, political scientist Robert J. Spitzer combats hysteria and rhetoric with simple facts. He takes no position on whether more or fewer gun control laws are needed or whether guns are good or bad. Instead, he traces the roots of the Second Amendment, analyzes the opinions and intentions of its authors, follows its application and evolution from its beginnings, and explores the views expressed by the courts. He then carefully compares the intended and the implied meaning of this amendment with the views expressed by the entire spectrum of groups involved in the gun control issue. Armed with the facts, readers can decide for themselves.
