The Troubles in Northern Ireland and theories of social movements

The Troubles in Northern Ireland and theories of social movements PDF Author: Gianluca De Fazio
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9048528631
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 245

Book Description
This volume seeks to move beyond structure and agency perspectives by suggesting that social movement theories are best suited to foster a perspective that entails 1) an actor-based approach to the Troubles; and 2) the contextualization of contentious politics, or how the contingent and ever-evolving political contexts/opportunities/threats shaped the trajectory of the Troubles. Recent social movement scholarship has proved to be particularly useful in situating the emergence, continuation, and demise of political violence within a larger context of multiple conflicts, in which radical contention is only one possible outcome. Social movement theories also avoid the essentialization of political groups as 'radical' or 'violent'; instead, they place all political actors participating to contention, from paramilitaries to state authorities, within their complex organizational fields, emphasizing their shifting strategies as they interact with each other and adapt to the political context.

Democracy and Deep-rooted Conflict

Democracy and Deep-rooted Conflict PDF Author: Peter Harris
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
How does one build democracy in the aftermath of a violent, deep-rooted conflict? This handbook shows how to structure negotiations and design democratic institutions which address the real needs and interests of conflicting parties. It provides practical advice for policy-makers and political leaders in post-conflict societies and presents a wealth of options that can be drawn upon to build a sustainable peace. Aimed at those negotiating a peace settlement, this book provides a thorough overview of democratic levers - such as power-sharing formulas, questions of federalism and autonomy, options for electoral reform, when to use truth commissions, transitional justice mechanisms, methods of preserving minority rights, constitutional safeguards and many others. It also analyses actual negotiated settlements from various countries and illustrates the many, often unrecognized, options that negotiators can draw upon when attempting to build or rebuild democracy.

John Hume and the SDLP

John Hume and the SDLP PDF Author: Gerard Murray
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
The SDLP has consistently defined the Northern Ireland problem as one of a divided people, rather than a territorial issue. Therefore, it raises the important question: how much revision from the traditional nationalist perspective does the SDLP portray, if at all, from the mid-70s onwards? The major objective of this study is to investigate the tensions within the party over its political identity. From the SDLP viewpoint, the huge 'yes' vote (in the 22nd May, 1998 Referendum after this book went to press), offers the greatest hope in Northern Ireland's history that Catholics and Protestants can live together on the basis of respect and equality.

Politics in Plural Societies

Politics in Plural Societies PDF Author: Alvin Rabushka
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Longman
ISBN: 9780205617616
Category : Comparative government
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This landmark study in the field of comparative politics is being celebrated for its return to print as the newest addition to the "Longman Classics in Political Science" series. Politics in Plural Societies presents a model of political competition in multi-ethnic societies and explains why plural societies, and the struggle for power within them, often erupt with inter-ethnic hostility. Distinguished scholars Alvin Rabushka and Kenneth Shepsle collaborate again in this reissuing of their classic work to demonstrate - in a new epilogue - the persistence of the arguments and evidence first offered in the book. They apply this thesis to the multi-ethnic politics of countries that are of great interest today: Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Yugoslavia, and more.

Northern Ireland after the troubles

Northern Ireland after the troubles PDF Author: Colin Coulter
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1847794882
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
In the last generation, Northern Ireland has undergone a tortuous yet remarkable process of social and political change. This collection of essays aims to capture the complex and shifting realities of a society in the process of transition from war to peace. The book brings together commentators from a range of academic backgrounds and political perspectives. As well as focusing upon those political divisions and disputes that are most readily associated with Northern Ireland, it provides a rather broader focus than is conventionally found in books on the region. It examines the cultural identities and cultural practices that are essential to the formation and understanding of Northern Irish society but are neglected in academic analyses of the six counties. While the contributors often approach issues from rather different angles, they share a common conviction of the need to challenge the self-serving simplifications and choreographed optimism that frequently define both official discourse and media commentary on Northern Ireland. Taken together, the essays offer a comprehensive and critical account of a troubled society in the throes of change.
