The North-South Dialogue and the United Nations PDF Author: John W. McDonald
Publisher: University Press of Amer
ISBN: 9780819150585
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en

Book Description
The complex North-South dialogue between the 125 developing countries and the 24 industrialized countries of the 'West' centers largely around the contentious issue of the distribution of the world's resources and income. This paper presents an overview of the principal arenas in which the North-South debate has developed and become institutionalized. The study concludes that patient work and hard negotiation on a number of levels within the United Nations framework have resulted in incremental progress and a remarkable degree of consensus. Originally published in 1982 by the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy.

Our Common Agenda - Report of the Secretary-General

Our Common Agenda - Report of the Secretary-General PDF Author: United Nations
Publisher: United Nations
ISBN: 9213583893
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
On the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations, the world has faced its biggest shared test since the Second World War in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Yet while our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together, international cooperation has never been harder to achieve. This report answers a call from UN Member States to provide recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges. Its proposals are grounded in a renewal of the social contract, adapted to the challenges of this century, taking into account younger and future generations, complemented by a new global deal to better protect the global commons and deliver global public goods. Through a deepening of solidarity—at the national level, between generations, and in the multilateral system—Our Common Agenda provides a path forward to a greener, safer and better future.

The Future of the United Nations System

The Future of the United Nations System PDF Author: Chadwick F. Alger
Publisher: United Nations University Press
ISBN: 9789280809732
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
What does the future hold for the UN? In this book, twenty-two scholars from all continents contribute twelve chapters that cover prevention of violence, creating economic and social structures that sustain human fulfilment, sharing and protecting the commons, and peace education. The search for future potential, based on experience in these twelve "laboratories," leads to sixty-six recommendations for new institutions and programs on issues that include controlling weapons, humanitarian intervention, collaboration between UN peacekeepers and NGOs, human rights, economic policies, advancement of women, refugees, ecological security, communications, and peace education. These recommendations are brought together in a concluding chapter and summarized in the appendix. Most of the recommendations do not require amendments to the UN Charter or to the treaties establishing the UN Specialized Agencies. Instead, their implementation would require creative efforts of Member States, secretariats, NGOs, and dedicated individuals that are pointed toward attainment of multilateral capacity for coping with an array of global problems that increasingly threaten the quality of human life. This is stimultaing reading for anyone who wants to be challenged to think creatively about the potential for coping with a growing array of global problems.
