Book Description
The moths of the family Aegeriidae, the so-called clearwings ("Glass-fluger"), are normally easily recognized by the general habitus, the narrow, mostly hyaline wings, and the dilated antennae, tufted at the tips, although these antennal characters do not hold for some of the genera (Bembecia, Zenodoxus). The family contains more than a dozen American species of considerable economic importance, these being known to the orchardist, gardener, and forester under the names of peachtree borer, persimmon borer, strawberry crown moth, grapevne root borer, maple bark borer, ash tree borer, hornet moth, squash borer, etc. As a group these moths have for some time stood in need of the revision and nomenclatural clarification that this work supplies.

The North American Aegeriidae Lepidoptera
Studies in North American Aegeriidae (Lepidoptera)
A List of the North American Lepidoptera and Key to the Literature of this Order of Insects
Author: Harrison Gray Dyar
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Lepidoptera
Languages : en
Pages : 760
Book Description
This work is intended to take the place of Smith's List of the Lepidoptera of Boreal America (1891), and to furnish a condensed catalogue of North American Lepidoptera comparable to Staudinger and Rebel's Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Europe. With a few years several of the larger families of the Lepidoptera have been fully catalogued, so that it seemed both unnecessary and inadvisable to repeat all of this mater. To avoid this, and yet make these references easily available, a catalogue reference is given at the head of each family, abbreviated "C" and it is specifically referred to by pages or numbers. The original reference to each species is, however, always repeated, except in the case of old synonyms. All specific synonyms are included, but where the reference is not given it will be found in the Catalogue referred to.

Catalogue of the Described Lepidoptera of North America

Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Described Lepidoptera of North America: Prepared for the Smithsonian Institution In the preparation of this Catalogue all accessible books have been consulted, and it is believed that no descriptions of American Lepidoptera have been overlooked. The works which my own library and those of the Smithsonian Institution and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia do not contain, were kindly lent by entomological friends. The "authorities," enumerated on a subsequent page, will show the extent of my researches. The classification adopted is that recommended in part by Herrick-Schaeffer and Walker, but in some of the families of the Noctuidae I have followed Guenee. A catalogue like the present is not the place for strict scientific classification; that must be left for a systematic descriptive work. As far as p. 49, Guenee's volumes have been cited according to their number as regards the subject, ex. gr. vol. V. of the Suites a Buffon, is vol I. of Noctuelites, and I have thus referred to them, but after p. 49 they are quoted according to the Suites. I am well aware of the imperfections of this Catalogue in many respects, but it will still give a fair exhibition of what has been accomplished in this department. The Mexican and West Indian species have been included, or most of them, at the earnest entreaty of several entomologists; firstly, because some of the species are common to the continent and the islands; and, secondly, because it is not impossible that before many years our political boundaries may extend over some of those countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
