Book Description
Excerpt from The American Normal Readers, Vol. 3 For the primary teacher the study of history, especially in its beginnings, is extremely important. If we would really understand the minds of children, let us turn back to the pages of the past where we may follow the development of the race as it has been led forward toward perfect adjustment and realization, for in the develop ment of the race we may see that of the typical child. By actual experience in teaching we learn that certain things appeal most to children and are therefore most effective at specific stages of their advancement. We are often able to determine very nearly the learning point of the child's mind, and by the study of the child in the light of history we come to understand why all this is true. We see that those elements which have entered most persistently into the development of the race are the very things in which the child finds his greatest delight. This truth has a deep significance in practical education. If we as teachers will be guided by the natural spontaneous interest of children and if we will at the same time direct this interest toward their highest good, following in advance as it were, we shall not be found blindly striving against Nature and perhaps checking many a God-given impulse, but by understanding the child's real need we may be able to supply it more fully and exactly and so to assist the natural course of his advancement. This is the central thought of the American Normal Readers. An effort has been made throughout to provide material interesting and truly profitable to the child because suited to his needs, and helpful and suggestive to the teacher. Book Description
Excerpt from The Normal Training of the Child The subject has three key words. These will be used to unlock the doors into our house of study. What we say will be directly related to these words education, the child, the Bible School. It is not the province of this lecture to deal primarily and fundamentally with the educational problem. And yet when we would talk or write suggestively and intelligently of the child, and the child's relation to the school, the thought of education becomes close, vital and necessary. We must also realize that the child was not made for the school but the school for the child. And the natural and normal answer for the school's existence is for the purpose of edu cation. What then is the function of education? Education, says President Butler, of Columbia, is the adaptation of a person, a self-conscious be ing, to environment and the development of capacity in a person to modify or control that environment. It is first a matter of principles and second a matter of methods. To prepare us for complete living is the function which education has to discharge. Book Description
Excerpt from The Normal School Bulletin, Vol. 10: October 1, 1904 The other educational influences that are at work during at least four-fifths of the waking hours of the child are the father and mother in the home, the natural surroundings and the community life, with its many industrial, commer cial, political, social, and religious phases. Tparents and guardians, not teachers, are responsible for the children's companionship out of school; responsible for the manner in which they spend their time, for what they read, the games they play, and the whole warp and woof of the children's physical, mental, and moral life when not in the school room. The fortuitous education of natural environment and social experience is indirect but powerful. The home and school, the largest factors in the child's education, should certainly co-operate in molding all other influences. Europe The city of Philadelphia, whose system of public schools, made free by taxation on property, went into Operation only two years before Connecti cut passed a law exempting the people from the obligation of raising a tax on property for a portion of the expense of supporting common schools (thc most disastrous law ever placed on her statute book) - has now a system of public instruction from the Primary School for children four years of age, to the Normal School in which the female teachers of all her schools can be trained, maintained with a liberality, and embracing opportunities of an extended English, cltissical, and business education, which is free to all and practically enjoyed by the children of the rich and poor - of which we have no approach in any city of our State. Book Description
Excerpt from Instruction in the Grades, Values and Methods: A Textbook for Normal Students and Young Teachers I shall not attempt to acknowledge my indebted ness to other writers on education. In fact, I could not, if I would. The ideas herein expressed are, now at least, so absolutely my own, that even though I may be only their foster father, I cannot distinguish them from my own Offspring. This much I can safely say, that no view set forth in this book is written simply because it conforms to somebody 's theory. Neither has newness, as such, been a part of my aim. I have merely attempted to collect, in an orderly fashion, such parts of my educational experience and reflection as I thought would be helpful to teachers and normal school students. I trust that, if the reviewer is moved to exclaim with Lessing, This book con tains much that is good and much that is new, he will not supplement it with the caustic comment that the good is not new and the new is not good. Fundamentals in Elementary Education (Classic Reprint)

Fundamentals in Elementary Education (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Claude A. Fhillips
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780428999865
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
Excerpt from Fundamentals in Elementary Education The subject matter of this book is a direct outgrowth of the experiences of the Department of Education in the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri, in giving courses in Education to beginners in that subject. During the ten years of the experiment, the major portion of the material has been tried out in more than one hundred fifty classes, taught by well-trained teachers. The book is de signed primarily for students in Teacher-training Classes in Education in high schools, and in Elementary Courses in normal schools; and it is well adapted to Teachers' Reading Circles. It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the Problems presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students. The selected readings are intended chiefly for supplementary purposes, and for those students who have access to a good library. It is needless to state that the writer claims no large degree of originality for the volume, because he has drawn freely upon pedagogical literature as it relates to the elementary school.
