Book Description
Stay safe. Stay at home. This is what the whole world has been told during the greater part of this year, 2020. Lockdown is a term that even both my grandsons of pre-school going age understand. This isolation from the outside world is for our own good, we have been told. And this is probably true. So many millions have been infected by this novel coronavirus, COVID-19. At the time of writing there was more than 35 million infections worldwide1 and more than a million had already succumbed to this deadly enemy of the human race. The disease has not only been a threat to the health of the global population, but has also left, in its path of destruction, crippled economies and, consequently, has added millions to the already high number of unemployed people in the world. In my previous work entitled, The Church, The City & The Virus2, I have contended that probably not all countries have always responded to this pandemic in a manner that had the best interests of most of its citizens at heart. In my humble opinion, this is especially true in the case of our own country, South Africa. It appears now, with hindsight, that from the get-go, political opportunists set themselves up to benefit from the plight and suffering of the people of this nation. Heartless and corrupt, politically connected individuals have enriched themselves, their friends and their families at the expense of the poor and the destitute. The extent of the corruption has not only reached to the high heavens, but has also angered a nation already suffering the worst nightmare imaginable. There are so many sayings and clichés that one can think of that ring chillingly true during these dark days and crazy times. As others have said so many times before, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Evil triumphs when good people do nothing. Those who are silent when they ought to have spoken and were able to, are taken to agree. In South Africa, now, in this author’s view, there remains a confusing silence from very influential and very powerful people whose voices many South Africans have expected to hear. I am not referring to the voices of politicians from opposition parties - sometimes, during this pandemic, politicians opposed to the ruling party have probably made relevant and useful contributions - but one can never be sure whether it is really about the nation’s interest or their own narrow interests. Other good but faint voices have also been heard. There is an organisation named For South Africa or FORSA for short, who have submitted important input to the powers that be, and they should probably be appreciated for that. The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has provided some response as far as the recent wave of corruption is concerned, but the practical possibilities of executing their proposed programme of action has yet to be seen. Many business leaders have spoken - but again, one must hope that it is really about the greater good and in the interest of the vulnerable majority and not about narrow personal, business interest. Trade unions and certain state-salaried employee groups have also made their voices heard. Again, one cannot be sure whether it is out of concern for the nation’s interests or self-interest.

Book Description
Family Book 1 of 2 Lovers to Enemies Enemies to... The rivalry runs strong and fuels the burning chemistry between Sebastian and Blake in this late-summer romance where they have two options. Quick and hard or not at all. He put me on edge before he even cruised into town with his cowboy hat, devil-may-care grin, and Southern drawl. Partly because I couldn't help viewing him as a threat. He was my best friend's brother-and maybe more importantly, the uncle of Teddy, a special kid who'd been the light of my life for years. Teddy couldn't be more excited about his uncle visiting. Me...not so much. No matter how intensely the chemistry sizzled between us when we met, no matter how much my chest seized up at the sight of him, no matter how easily he drew me in. He could return to his closet in Georgia for all I cared, preferably before I lost my ever-loving mind and had to wage war against the man who somehow got under my skin. This story takes place in Cara Dee's Camassia Cove Universe, a fictional town where all books stand on their own, unless otherwise stated, and the reader can jump in wherever they want.

Experience the forces that shaped an American icon -- and America itself -- in this gripping tale of courage, country, loyalty, and love. George Takei has captured hearts and minds worldwide with his magnetic performances, sharp wit, and outspoken commitment to equal rights. But long before he braved new frontiers in STAR TREK, he woke up as a four-year-old boy to find his own birth country at war with his father's -- and their entire family forced from their home into an uncertain future. In 1942, at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten "relocation centers," hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard. THEY CALLED US ENEMY is Takei's firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the terrors and small joys of childhood in the shadow of legalized racism, his mother's hard choices, his father's tested faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future. What does it mean to be American? Who gets to decide? George Takei joins cowriters Justin Eisinger & Steven Scott and artist Harmony Becker for the journey of a lifetime.

Book Description
“In the world of black-op thrillers, Mitch Rapp continues to be among the best of the best” (Booklist, starred review), and he returns in the #1 New York Times bestselling series alone and targeted by a country that is supposed to be one of America’s closest allies. After 9/11, the United States made one of the most secretive and dangerous deals in its history—the evidence against the powerful Saudis who coordinated the attack would be buried and in return, King Faisal would promise to keep the oil flowing and deal with the conspirators in his midst. But when the king’s own nephew is discovered funding ISIS, the furious President gives Rapp his next mission: he must find out more about the high-level Saudis involved in the scheme and kill them. The catch? Rapp will get no support from the United States. Forced to make a decision that will change his life forever, Rapp quits the CIA and assembles a group of independent contractors to help him complete the mission. They’ve barely begun unraveling the connections between the Saudi government and ISIS when the brilliant new head of the intelligence directorate discovers their efforts. With Rapp getting too close, he threatens to go public with the details of the post-9/11 agreement between the two countries. Facing an international incident that could end his political career, the President orders America’s intelligence agencies to join the Saudis’ effort to hunt the former CIA man down. Rapp, supported only by a team of mercenaries with dubious allegiances, finds himself at the center of the most elaborate manhunt in history. With white-knuckled twists and turns leading to “an explosive climax” (Publishers Weekly), Enemy of the State is an unputdownable thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the final page.

Enemy Combatant

Enemy Combatant PDF Author: Moazzam Begg
Publisher: The New Press
ISBN: 1595587330
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
When Enemy Combatant was first published in the United States in hardcover in 2006 it garnered sensational reviews, and its author was featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, on National Public Radio, and on ABC News. A second generation British Muslim, Begg had been held by the U.S. military for more than three years before being released without charge in January of 2005. His memoir is the first published account by a Guantánamo detainee of life inside the infamous prison. Writing in the Washington Post Book World, Jane Mayer described Enemy Combatant as “fascinating . . . Begg provides some ideological counterweight to the one-sided spin coming from the U.S. government. He writes passionately and personally, stripping readers of the comforting lie that somehow the detainees aren't really like us, with emotional attachments, intellectual interests and fully developed humanity.” Recommended by the Financial Times and Tikkun magazine and a ColorLines Editors' Pick of Post-9/11 Books, Enemy Combatant is “a forcefully told, up-to-the-minute political story . . . necessary reading for people on all sides of the issue” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
