Governance and Politics of the Netherlands

Governance and Politics of the Netherlands PDF Author: Rudy B. Andeweg
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350311383
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
The new fifth edition of this leading textbook provides a clear and comprehensive account of governance and politics in the Netherlands. The book has been revised throughout to provide full coverage of recent developments and events, including the latest proposals for constitutional reform. The Netherlands has often been characterized as a place of political calm, with a culture of cooperation and compromise in dealing with key political issues. Now, at a time when climate change and immigration are high on the political agenda, the electorate is growing ever more unpredictable and political fragmentation makes forming majority coalitions increasingly difficult, it is vital to question how the Dutch system will continue to achieve consensus. With this in mind, the authors take a comparative and analytical approach as they examine the features of the country's political system that have long made it a subject of study for political scientists. Governance and Politics of the Netherlands provides both students and scholars with a complete and reliable introduction to a country whose small size belies its importance in comparative political analysis. New to this Edition: - Fully revised and updated throughout to reflect the latest developments, events and issues. - Cites the most recent data sources (e.g. national election study and parliamentary study). - Discusses latest proposals for constitutional reform.

Italy and EC Membership Evaluated

Italy and EC Membership Evaluated PDF Author: Francesco Francioni
Publisher: Burns & Oates
ISBN:
Category : De Europæiske Fællesskaber
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
This is a study of the costs and benefits to Italy of EC membership. Compared to their counterparts in the rest of Europe, Italians have always been amongst the most favourable to European integration. The level of domestic consensus is borne out by the fact that since the 1970s, no Italian party has adopted the anti-European platform. This has reflected a perception that Italy would benefit politically and economically from association with a larger network of states in Europe. Certainly in political terms the benefits have outweighed the costs. The contributors to this volume assess whether or not this will continue to be the case in the future.

Limits of European Citizenship

Limits of European Citizenship PDF Author: Maarten P. Vink
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230514375
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
Maarten Vink explores change and resilience of citizenship under pressure from European integration. To assess the meaning of national and European citizenship the book analyzes parliamentary immigration debates from the 1990s in the Netherlands. The hesitant penetration of 'Europe' in these domestic debates on issues of asylum, resident status and nationality evidences the continuing relevance of domestic politics for the extension of membership and rights to non-citizens, and demonstrates the unsettled nature of European citizenship.

The Intergovernmental Conference on Political Union

The Intergovernmental Conference on Political Union PDF Author: Finn Laursen
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004641238
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
The radical changes taking place in the international scene during the late 1980s have presented the European Communities with important new challenges. The twelve Member States agreed that the only way to respond effectively to this new situation was to speed up the European integration process, and in December 1990 two Intergovernmental Conferences were inaugurated, focusing respectively on the development of an Economic and Monetary Union and a Political Union. It was the difficult task of the Luxembourg and Dutch Presidencies to channel the often very diverging positions of the different actors in the process into one coherent set of amendments to the Treaties forming the European Communities. This publication examines the positions which the different Member States, the Commission and the European Parliament have been defending in the Intergovernmental Conference on Political Union and more particularly with regard to one of the most sensitive topics under discussion, namely the development of a Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). The introduction places the debate on the development of a Political Union and a CFSP in an historical perspective and gives an overview of the progression of the negotiations. The concluding chapter presents a general framework for better understanding of the course and results of the negotiations, and a critical evaluation of the outcome. The annexes reproduce the main proposals on the development of a CFSP submitted to the Conference.
