Book Description
Excerpt from The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds, Vol. 1 I have long regretted my inability to issue a revised edition of 'nests and Eggs.' For many years after the first Rough Draft appeared, I went on laboriously accumulating materials for a re-issue, but subsequently circumstances pre vented my undertaking the work. Now, fortunately, my friend Mr. Eugene Oates has taken the matter up, and much as I may personally regret having to hand over to another a task, the performance of which I should so much have enjoyed, it is some consolation to feel that the readers, at any rate, of this work Will have no cause for regret, but rather of rejoicing that the work has passed into younger and stronger hands. Book Description
The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds Volume 1 By Allan O. Hume The nest, placed in a stout fork as a rule, is a large, strong, compact, stick structure, very like a Rook's nest at home, and like these is used year after year, whether by the same birds or others of the same species I cannot say. Of course they never breed in company: I never found two of their nests within 100 yards of each other, and, as a rule, they will not be found within a quarter of a mile of each other. Book Description
Excerpt from The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds, Vol. 3: With Four Portraits My task being completed, it is now my pleasant duty to acknowledge the kind assistance I have received in England from many friends; and I take this opportunity of including in the number those gentlemen who have also assisted me in writing the 'Birds of India, ' so far as it is completed. It is needless to say that at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, I received the utmost assistance from Professor Flower and Dr. Gunther, and the latter gentleman placed every facility for work at my disposal. It was a decided improvement to work in the well-appointed room now devoted to Birds in the new Museum instead of the uncomfortable gallery at Bloomsbury where I wrote my 'Birds of Burmah' in 1883; and I must admit that the way in which the enormous additions to the bird-collection during the past few years have been arranged and made available for study by my friend Mr. Bowdler Sharpe must impress everyone with admiration for his industry and powers of organization. Both from him and his colleague Mr. W. R. Ogilvie Grant I have always received the most friendly help on all occasions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds, Vol. 2: With Four Portraits Mr. Brooks informs us that this Flycatcher is abundant in the pine-woods of Cashmere, about 7000 feet elevation, where it breeds. Mr. Hodgson figures the nest, placed on the stump end of a broad broken branch - a very massive, rather shallow pad, with a cup-shaped cavity composed of moss and lichens and lined with black moss-roots. The egg is figured as above described. The nest is about 4 inches across and less than 2 high, and the cavity is a little less than inch in diameter. Major Wardlaw Ramsay says, writing of this Species in Afghan istan Breeding in May and June. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
