Impertinences

Impertinences PDF Author: Elia Wilkinson Peattie
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 0803287860
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
Impertinences: Selected Writings of Elia Peattie is a collection of articles, editorials, and narratives by Elia Peattie written during her tenure at the Omaha World-Herald from 1888 to 1896, richly illustrated with photographs from the period. Elia (Wilkinson) Peattie (1862?1935) was born during the Civil War and came of age at the advent of the era of the New Woman. In many ways Peattie embodied this new age of independence for women, writing both fiction and journalism and becoming one of the first Plains women to write editorial columns in a major newspaper that addressed public issues. ø Not shy with her opinions about current events in the state of Nebraska in the late nineteenth century, Peattie tackled subjects such as the Wounded Knee Massacre, capital punishment and lynchings, prostitution, the Omaha stockyards, beet-field workers in Grand Island, schools and child rearing, the need for orphanages, shelters for unwed mothers, charity hospitals, and the New Woman. ø Editor Susanne George Bloomfield includes a biography of Peattie, who is described as "tall, dignified, and kindly, and possessing a wicked sense of humor." Peattie's work now stands as a rare and valuable history of Nebraska, showing us a lively frontier society through the eyes of a woman engaged in the life of her community and her own struggle to balance her family and career

From Mozart to the Med... a New Life Afloat

From Mozart to the Med... a New Life Afloat PDF Author: Malcolm Nabarro
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 184799217X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
From Mozart to the Med ... a new life afloat.Malcolm and Janet Nabarro are musicians who for a major part of their working lives performed with the professional orchestra Malcolm established in 1982. After resigning their positions in the mid 90's their search for a new direction led to the idea of buying a boat and sailing off into a new life. A classic twin engined cruiser, eventually purchased and re-named Starry Vere, was their first boat. The purchase, a time of both doubt and excitement, led them to embark on an eventful steep learning curve as they moved from a life musical to one nautical. Mistakes and near-misses are matched by triumph, satisfaction and sheer joy, culminating in their adventure where they leave British shores and head for France as full-time live-a-boards. Their voyage is more than just geographical. It's a time of healing, reconciling, of growing and enriching. Most of all it's a story of learning to live again.

Neptune's Inferno

Neptune's Inferno PDF Author: James D. Hornfischer
Publisher: Bantam
ISBN: 0553385127
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 578

Book Description
“A literary tour de force that is destined to become one of the . . . definitive works about the battle for Guadalcanal . . . [James D.] Hornfischer deftly captures the essence of the most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war.”—San Antonio Express-News The Battle of Guadalcanal has long been heralded as a Marine victory. Now, with his powerful portrait of the Navy’s sacrifice, James D. Hornfischer tells for the first time the full story of the men who fought in destroyers, cruisers, and battleships in the narrow, deadly waters of “Ironbottom Sound.” Here, in stunning cinematic detail, are the seven major naval actions that began in August 1942, a time when the war seemed unwinnable and America fought on a shoestring, with the outcome always in doubt. Working from new interviews with survivors, unpublished eyewitness accounts, and newly available documents, Hornfischer paints a vivid picture of the officers and enlisted men who opposed the Japanese in America’s hour of need. The first major work on this subject in almost two decades, Neptune’s Inferno does what all great battle narratives do: It tells the gripping human stories behind the momentous events and critical decisions that altered the course of history and shaped so many lives. Praise for Neptune’s Inferno “Vivid and engaging . . . extremely readable, comprehensive and thoroughly researched.”—Ronald Spector, The Wall Street Journal “Superlative storytelling . . . the masterwork on the long-neglected topic of World War II’s surface ship combat.”—Richard B. Frank, World War II “The author’s two previous World War II books . . . thrust him into the major leagues of American military history writers. Neptune’s Inferno is solid proof he deserves to be there.”—The Dallas Morning News “Outstanding . . . The author’s narrative gifts and excellent choice of detail give an almost Homeric quality to the men who met on the sea in steel titans.”—Booklist (starred review) “Brilliant . . . a compelling narrative of naval combat . . . simply superb.”—The Washington Times
