Book Description
Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill. Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE. Although the court records may put the title of the family residence in the father's name, still every member of the household may truly and lovingly say, This is my home; so the Bible, let it be reverently said, is as truly the people's book, the Nation's Book, and the world's book, as it is the book of God, our Father, who, in His own way, prepared and gave it to us. The whole includes the sum of all its parts, so all the schools of the individual states of our broad land, collectively regarded, are the Nation's Schools. Their unity of purpose is indicated, emphasized and promoted by the United States Government and by the National Educational Association. No single interest of the United States merits and demands more intelligent, conscientious and unceasing care than her schools. The physical, mental and moral integrity of every individual, community and commonwealth has an influence more or less remote upon their value. An acquaintance with the Nation's Book must necessarily be made by each generation if the prosperity of our country is to be maintained from century to century. The tide for the people of the present time, in this respect, is rising; as is well illustrated by the large classes for Bible study in Chicago, and elsewhere, and in the activity in the sale and distribution of Bibles and parts of Bibles everywhere. If this tide is to be taken at its flood in the interest of true patriotism, the people generally must master the Bible. Every aid, Mechanical (i. e., the Blackboard and the Stereopticon) Literary and Spiritual, should be challenged for the inculcation of Biblical thought and precept. Selections appropriate for recitation on special occasions taken from the Introduction, Tributes and Testimonies in this...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of Nations, an Experiment in Social Education: With Chapters on China and Japan The American Nation has gradually recognized that the trend of world-events has swept it from a place of minor importance in international relations to a place of major influence in world affairs. On the one hand, its internal affairs have become SO entangled with its neighbor-nations that it cannot longer solve its own problems without a due understanding of the national traditions, aspirations, and needs of the peo ples surrounding it. On the other hand, it has become so powerful in the world's respect that it has with sudden compulsion been forced to assume, along with the other great societies of the earth, its full share of responsibility for world-civilization. Book Description
Excerpt from The League of Nations Every person in the world capable of rational thought wishes and hopes not only for immediate peace, but that, so far as human agencies can make it, war shall be made impossible in the future. It is inevitable that thinking men, although inspired by the same high motives, shall differ as to the means to secure permanent peace and equity between nations. Written instruments will not alter human nature, nor can the passions of men in the last recourse be controlled by signed pledges, but that treaties between honorable nations consistent with their normal life and progress are enduring, has been proven. We believe that President Wilson, Mr. Taft, Senator Lodge, and Senator Knox, whose recent speeches we have reprinted here, have one thought in common, and that is their wish to see the present negotiations in Paris result in a permanent equitable peace for all peoples.
