Book Description
Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 2: Critical Studies The picture Of Catherine's life and teaching which was attempted in the previous volume will, I hope, have been sufficiently vivid to stimulate in the reader a desire to try and go deeper, and to get as near as may be to the driving forces, the metaphysical depths Of her life. And yet it is Obvious that, if we would understand something Of these, we must pro ceed slowly and thoroughly, and must begin with comparatively Superficial questions. Or rather, we must begin by studying her temperamental and psycho-physical endowment and con dition, and then the literary in uences that stimulated and helped to mould these things, as though all this were not secondary and but the material and occasion Of the forces and self-determinations to be considered later on. Book Description
Hügel's The Mystical Element of Religion features a critical but largely appreciative philosophy of mysticism. The author's "three elements of religion" are his most enduring contribution to theological thinking. The human soul, the movements of western civilization, and the phenomena of religion itself he characterized by these three elements: the historical/institutional element, the intellectual/speculative element, and the mystical/experiential element. This typology provided for him an understanding of the balance, tension, and 'friction' that exists in religious thinking and in the complexity of reality and existence. It was an organizing paradigm that remained central to his project. The effort to hold these sometimes disparate dimensions together was structurally and theologically dominant throughout his writing. The main subject of Hügel's study are the life and teaching of Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510), the Italian Roman Catholic saint and mystic, admired for her work among the sick and the poor and remembered because of various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences. Contents: The Three Chief Forces of Western Civilization The Three Elements of Religion Catherine Fiesca Adorna's Life, up to her Conversion; and the Chief Peculiarities predominant throughout her Convert Years Catherine's Life from 1473 to 1506, and its Main Changes and Growth Catherine's Last Four Years, 1506-1510 Catherine's Doctrine Catherine's Remains and Cultus Battista Vernazza's Life Psycho-physical and Temperamental Questions The Main Literary Sources of Catherine's Conceptions Catherine's Less Ultimate This-World Doctrines The After-Life Problems and Doctrines The First Three Ultimate Questions The Two Final Problems: Mysticism and Pantheism, the Immanence of God, And Spiritual Personality, Human and Divine Back Through Asceticism, Social Religion, and the Scientific Habit of Mind, to the Mystical Element of Religion

Book Description
Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 1: Introduction and Biographies Four months have sufficed to require a Second Impression Of this lengthy study Of difficult and complex themes. And this, evidently not because, but in spite of, certain peculiarities of style, - Germanisms strange on the part Of the son of a pure Scotchwoman, resident in England for some thirty-six years and more. I take this success to be due, predominantly, to the pro found importance and abiding interest Of the subject Of the book, and to the general character Of the method attempted here. May the very defects of the work help to bring home to the reader this inexhaustible richness Of its subject-matter, and to indicate the pre-existence, the super-eminence, the independence of the august Object Of religion, as compared with those very aspirations and convictions which this Object itself occasions and incites, and which our analyses so in adequately fathom. God, the Divine Spirit, is indeed before, within, and after all our truest dignity and deepest disquiet. If some years hence a Second Edition is called for, I Shall hope greatly to improve the book, largely by the aid of my various critics' strictures and requirements, which, so far, have.
