All the Names of the Lord

All the Names of the Lord PDF Author: Valentina Izmirlieva
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226388727
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
Christians face a conundrum when it comes to naming God, for if God is unnamable, as theologians maintain, he can also be called by every name. His proper name is thus an open-ended, all-encompassing list, a mystery the Church embraces in its rhetoric, but which many Christians have found difficult to accept. To explore this conflict, Valentina Izmirlieva examines two lists of God’s names: one from The Divine Names, the classic treatise by Pseudo-Dionysius, and the other from The 72 Names of the Lord, an amulet whose history binds together Kabbalah and Christianity, Jews and Slavs, Palestine, Provence, and the Balkans. This unexpected juxtaposition of a theological treatise and a magical amulet allows Izmirlieva to reveal lists’ rhetorical potential to create order and to function as both tools of knowledge and of power. Despite the two different visions of order represented by each list, Izmirlieva finds that their uses in Christian practice point to a complementary relationship between the existential need for God’s protection and the metaphysical desire to submit to his infinite majesty—a compelling claim sure to provoke discussion among scholars in many fields.

Book Description
Excerpt from Yahweh-Elohim: The Memorial Name Expositions concerning this name, in all the beauty and accuracy, which a deep knowledge of the original languages, and the law and the testi mony could give, are contained in the writings of Dr. Thomas. To his valuable aid, we are indebted, for the true light of the Scriptures, concerning this glorious name yahweh-elohim. In his Pha nerosis, we find these words: The Memorial Name, exhibited in Moses' writings, is not Simply a word of four letters, given to an abstraction, as men give names to their children: but a name memorial of a future manifestation of the Eternal Spirit: which manifestation will not be of One, through One only: but of one in and through ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands: that the Name covers them all; and consequently, the thousands of thousands are but One Yahweh (p. The Unfolding Mystery of the Divine Name

The Unfolding Mystery of the Divine Name PDF Author: Michael P. Knowles
Publisher: InterVarsity Press
ISBN: 0830863915
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
When Moses asked God to show him his glory, the Lord passed before him and proclaimed his name. And from that name cascaded a promise of grace and love, compassion and faithfulness, forgiveness and slowness to anger. The story is told in Exodus 34:5-7, but the resonant name reverberates through the corridors of Scripture. Michael Knowles teases out the rich dimensions and implications of this name by listening carefully to Exodus 34 and its biblical echoes. He particularly tunes his ear to the spiritual meditations of later sages. In tracing the unfolding mystery of the divine name throughout the span of Israel's story, he finds it startlingly resolved in the God of Sinai becoming present in our midst. The manifold name of God has long captivated those who trace their spiritual ancestry to Abraham, whether they are Jewish, Christian or Muslim. This book brings this spiritual quest into dialogue with Scripture and tradition, and invites us to experience this God of the eternal name.

The Mystery of God's Will

The Mystery of God's Will PDF Author: Charles R. Swindoll
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 1418568309
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
"I don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't struggled with the desire to know God's will. The problem is, this struggle often involved a great deal of confusion and worry." ?Chuck Swindoll Many people have the idea that if they could just somehow find that single planned direction, they would be effortlessly swept through life. But life is not like that. Probably the most misunderstood factor of discovering God's will is the thought that, If I do this, the struggles will end, the questions are over, the answers come, and I live hapily ever after. But that's not reality. Does that mean that God's will must remain opaque to us?that we must muddle and grope blindly through life with no clue to what He wants for us? "Not at all," says Charles Swindoll. In this groundbreaking book, Swindoll invites us to join him on a spiritual quest. "I believe God's will for us in this life is not some black-and-white objective designed to take us to an appointed destination here on earth as much as it is about the journey itself . . . and what matters to Him in our lives." The Mystery of God's Will overflows with practical insights, humor, and unforgettable stories that will de-mystify, clarify, and put your mind at ease.
