Book Description
Ivory combs of the Late Bronze Age Aegean have not gained the proper attention so far, despite the fact that they belong, together with the pins and pyxis fashioned by the same material, to prestigious toiletry sets documented in the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean. Although they never became an indispensable accessory for the Mycenaeans, ivory combs indicate prosperity and high status for the male and female burials they furnished, from the exquisite gold-sheathed specimens of Grave Circle A at Mycenae to the later simple ones of the warrior burials in Achaea. The corpus of the 83 Mycenaean combs held at the National Archaeological Museum is the largest of the kind, with specimens covering almost all the Peloponnese and part of Attica, ranging in date from Late Helladic I to Late Helladic IIIC. Aspects of their technology, typology, iconography, context and social significance discussed in the volume, are expected to shed light on yet another important class of Mycenaean craftmanship

A Companion to the Archaeology of Early Greece and the Mediterranean
Author: Irene S. Lemos
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118770056
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1128
Book Description
A Companion that examines together two pivotal periods of Greek archaeology and offers a rich analysis of early Greek culture A Companion to the Archaeology of Early Greece and the Mediterranean offers an original and inclusive review of two key periods of Greek archaeology, which are typically treated separately—the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. It presents an in-depth exploration of the society and material culture of Greece and the Mediterranean, from the 14th to the early 7th centuries BC. The two-volume companion sets Aegean developments within their broader geographic and cultural context, and presents the wide-ranging interactions with the Mediterranean. The companion bridges the gap that typically exists between Prehistoric and Classical Archaeology and examines material culture and social practice across Greece and the Mediterranean. A number of specialists examine the environment and demography, and analyze a range of textual and archaeological evidence to shed light on socio-political and cultural developments. The companion also emphasizes regionalism in the archaeology of early Greece and examines the responses of different regions to major phenomena such as state formation, literacy, migration and colonization. Comprehensive in scope, this important companion: Outlines major developments in the two key phases of early Greece, the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age Includes studies of the geography, chronology and demography of early Greece Explores the development of early Greek state and society and examines economy, religion, art and material culture Sets Aegean developments within their Mediterranean context Written for students, and scholars interested in the material culture of the era, A Companion to the Archaeology of Early Greece and the Mediterranean offers a comprehensive and authoritative guide that bridges the gap between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.

Prehistory and Protohistory
History of the Hellenic World: Prehistory and protohistory
Author: George A. Christoloulos
Publisher: Penn State University Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 428
Book Description
Never has Greek prehistory--from the Stone Age to the end of the Mycenaean civilization--been so thoroughly revealed and explored. When the Greek edition appeared it was hailed by the Journal of Hellenic Studies as "a vast undertaking" and by the American Journal of Archaeology as "a most valuable work, created with love and care." The English translation, carried out by a team of experts under the direction of Dr. Phillip Sherrard of King's College, London, is accurate and lucid, and incorporates discoveries that came to light only after the Greek edition appeared. The volume begins with an account of the Stone Age followed by the Bronze Age and its brilliant civilization: Minoan Crete, the newly uncovered civilization of Thera, and the Age of "Golden Mycenae," the peak of Mycenaen civilization. The book abound with about 400 meticulously chosen illustrations of art objects, buildings and sites, as well as aerial photographs of historical and archaeological sites, new maps, plans and diagrams, all of which, accompanying the text, present the unfolding civilizations in a startlingly real and often highly imaginative light. This remarkable work is at once an impeccable piece of scholarship and an outstandingly beautiful volume. Written by thirteen eminent and archaeologist and historians, and illustrated throughout by color photographs of the highest quality, the book is required reading for the specialist and yet attractively accessible to interested layman.

The Dictionary of Art
Mycenaean Civilization
Author: Bryan Feuer
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 078641748X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 389
Book Description
Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.
