Walt Whitman's poetry, especially his Civil War poetry, attracted settings by a wide variety of modern composers in both English- and German-speaking countries. The essays in this volume trace the transformation of Whitman's nineteenth-century texts into vehicles for confronting twentieth-century problems-aesthetic, social, and political. The contributors pay careful attention to music and poetry alike in examining how the Whitman settings become exemplary means of dealing with both the tragic and utopian faces of modernism. By his death at the end of the nineteenth century, Walt Whitman was already a towering figure in the American literary scene, and his influence spread quickly into the realm of vocal music. Throughout the twentieth century, scores of composers used his texts for a variety of vocal settingsto a surprisingly similar result. Whilst preparing a recital presenting a number of these settings, my score study uncovered a propensity by composers toward the interval of a perfect fourth, even with settings differing in time period, instrumentation, and scale. These composers, paying careful attention to match their music to the tenets of Whitmans poetry, show sensitivity to the relationship between text and music. To both confirm and bolster this claim, I aimed to broadly establish a compositional language for these composers by providing examples and counter-examples of their music in terms of how it relates to text and subject matter. In doing so, the perfect fourth emerged as a more distinct analogue for the expansive and inclusive poetry of Whitman, and that discovery strived to affirm the power of connecting poetry to musical ideas in vocal music. The literary and poetic heft of Walt Whitman is rich for mining, and these composers mirror the craft, mastery and attention to detail that made Whitman such a monumental American artist. By allowing their artistic sensibility to subsume, in part, that of Walt Whitmans in setting his poetry, these composers ultimately ended up creating more poignant, universal, and personally transcendent works of art.

Walt Whitman consciously set out to forge a personal path for himself as a poet. Inspired by contemporaries like Emerson who expressed a need for a new, uniquely American style of poetry, Whitman eschewed conventions he saw as outdated or undemocratic. Setting aside traditional rhyme, meter, and even brevity, Whitman favored a style that was declarative, direct, and maximalist. For subject matter he focused on the common individual, as democratic representative of all humanity, and the natural world of which humanity exists as an integral part. “Song of Myself” is perhaps the most well-known exemplar of this aesthetic. Whitman’s poetic career took an abrupt turn during the American Civil War, and his poems from that time draw on his experiences volunteering at military hospitals. These, coupled with his elegy for President Lincoln after his assassination (“When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”), helped to cement Whitman’s position as a particularly American voice. Among Whitman’s recurring themes are the embracing of sensual pleasures, including frank acknowledgments of homosexuality. This latter aspect drove several contemporary critics to reject his work as indecent. Threats of censorship and outright banning encouraged his supporters to speak more publicly in defense of his work, however, and Whitman is now considered to be one of America’s most important poets. Leaves of Grass was continually edited and extended over most of Whitman’s life. Months before his death, he announced that the next edition would be the complete and definitive one. Referred to now as the “deathbed edition,” it was published in 1892 by Whitman’s literary executors, and is the basis for this ebook.
