Book Description
Volume 162 of Zoologica summarizes and updates all current information on morphology, taxonomy and distribution of the Central European Muscidae since Hennigs famous monograph on the Palaearctic species of this family published in 1955-1964 and today. The introductory part describes the family characteristics and reviews its systematics. Taxonomic and faunistic data from Central Europe (Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary) are reviewed and synthesized up to the present. Additional chapters deal with current knowledge of the morphology, development, biology and classification of European Muscidae. Identification keys are provided to enable identification of the families of the Calyptratae and the various categories of Central European Muscidae down to subfamily, genus and species. The review of species discusses all 406 regional species and presents information on their distinguishing features, their known geographic distribution, and their adult flight period. Almost one thousand figures on 54 plates depict all morphological features used in the keys and in the description of species characteristics. Special attention is paid to figures of the male and female terminalia as the most important species-specific criteria. Data of the geographic distribution of the Central European species are presented in an extensive table which includes their distribution in studied countries, their biogeographical classification, and geographical distribution outside of Europe. This monograph undisputedly represents a much needed reference work for researchers as well as students interested in evolution, phylogeny, morphology and identification of muscids.

The European Families of the Diptera

The European Families of the Diptera PDF Author: Pjotr Oosterbroek
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004278060
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
The European families of the Diptera presents an identification key and family descriptions of all 132 families of Diptera (midges, mosquitoes, gnats, true flies) occurring in Europe. It is written by a well-known Dutch specialist, in collaboration with over 30 European dipterists. For the extensive identification key a new combination of important characters is employed, enabling relatively easy identification of families which are aberrant or traditionally considered difficult to identify. Over 600 line drawings are included to illustrate characters and families. Apart from the key, the book includes an extensive chapter on terminology. Information on systematics and the number of genera and species in Europe, a survey of the main characters, a summary of the biology and of the pertaining identification literature is included for all families. Due to its design and content, the book will be of interest to the lay public and the serious amateur alike.

Book Description
This volume deals with the European species of the family Sepsidae, a small family of acalyptrate flies. The taxonomy, biology and faunistics of all the European species are revised with emphasis on the Fennoscandian species. Nine genera and 44 species are dealt with, along with one new species.

Generic Revision and Species Classification of the Microdontinae (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Generic Revision and Species Classification of the Microdontinae (Diptera, Syrphidae) PDF Author: Menno Reemer
Publisher: PenSoft Publishers LTD
ISBN: 9546426806
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Hoverflies of the subfamily Microdontinae have a reputation for causing confusion. The adult flies differ so much from other hoverflies that according to some they should be placed in a family of their own. Their diversity in shape and size is astonishing: from large, furry-haired species and convincing wasp-mimics to tiny, unsightly creatures, easily mistaken for something uninteresting. This paper introduces a new generic classification of the Microdontinae. A key to all 43 genera, 7 subgenera and some species groups is presented. All 552 available species names are classified into (sub)genera and species groups. The resulting classification comprises 454 valid species and 98 synonyms, of which 17 valid names and three synonyms are left unplaced. A total number of 26 new species are described, 267 new combinations of species and genera are proposed. The paper concludes with a discussion on diagnostic characters of Microdontinae.

Life Cycle and Development of Diptera

Life Cycle and Development of Diptera PDF Author: Muhammad Sarwar
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1838802258
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Diptera, or true flies, are of considerable economic importance, as these flies have a valuable role as scavengers, parasitoids and predators of other insects, pollinators, food for predators, bio-indicators of water quality, and tools for scientific research. In nine chapters, this book examines various aspects of flies of the order Diptera as well as some types of mosquitos and midges. Topics covered include taxonomy, phylogeny, life cycle, feeding habits, population control strategies, and more. A unique chapter on forensic entomology is particularly interesting. Beautifully illustrated and expertly researched, this volume will appeal to entomologists, biologists, and naturalists.

Entomology and the Law

Entomology and the Law PDF Author: Bernard Greenberg
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521809153
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Used particularly when there has been a suspicious death, insect-related evidence is one of the most powerful, but least understood examples of modern forensic science. Entomology and the Law provides a detailed roadmap that can be followed from crime scene to courtroom by entomologists, law enforcement personnel and lawyers preparing for trial. Part I focuses on carrion flies as forensic indicators, exploring relevant biology clearly and concisely illustrated by real-life cases. Flies are usually first on the scene of a death, and knowledge of their habits and lifestyles can help to reveal time of death, weeks or even years later. Part II provides a thorough examination of the law of scientific evidence worldwide, complete with caselaw and applicable code provisions, and legal issues relevant to the admissibility and use of forensic entomology in litigation. It will prepare both scientists and lawyers for real-world forays into the world of forensic entomology.

DNA barcoding: a practical tool for fundamental and applied biodiversity research

DNA barcoding: a practical tool for fundamental and applied biodiversity research PDF Author: Zoltan T Nagy
Publisher: PenSoft Publishers LTD
ISBN: 9546427101
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 419

Book Description
DNA barcoding has become a well-accepted and popular tool for the identification of species and the detection of cryptic taxonomic diversity. As such, it has a tremendous potential for a wide variety of applications in taxonomy, agronomy, conservation biology, forensics etc. Therefore, several countries, institutions and organizations have launched DNA barcoding projects in the context of the international ?Consortium for the Barcode of Life? (CBOL) initiative. Also Belgium has done so with the establishment of the FWO research community ?Belgian Network for DNA barcoding?. In 2012, this network organized the ?Third European Conference for the Barcode of Life? (ECBOL3) in Brussels. During this event a call was made to publish a collection of papers under the thematic title ?DNA barcoding: a practical tool for fundamental and applied biodiversity research?. With the financial support of the EC project ?ViBRANT? (Virtual Biodiversity Research and Access Network for Taxonomy), 21 papers were bundled to form this special ?ZooKeys? issue with the aim to present various applications, advantages and limitations of DNA barcoding. Hence, it is the editors? hope that this issue provides a modest, but timely, contribution to the already vast literature on DNA barcoding.
