Book Description
Excerpt from The Motive Power of the Human System With the Duodynamic Symptoms Treatment of Chronic Diseases We said thus much in the Preface to the third edition of this work and now that three more editions have been exhausted, and a seventh has become in urgent demand, we think it proper to add the following pertinent and gratifying facts that have ad interim transpired. The direct connection which we traced, many years since, between the posterior spinal nerves and the ganglionic or sympathetic system of nerves, and which has been denied and ridiculed by the great and little Solomons of the profession, has been demonstrated by volkman and bidder, the distinguished German anatomists, who distinctly traced it with the microscope. Thus the symptoms of disease, developed by pressure on the intervertebral spaces Of the spinal column, upon which the author has successfully practised for much more than a quarter of a century, and which he has taught in this and many previous publications, are now conclusively established by other evidence and authority and it will soon be seen that the pathology, treatment, and remedies, which we have so long adopted, in consonance with our knowledge of these symptoms, will be confirmed also, as appropriate and indispensable. The Vampire Lectures

The Vampire Lectures PDF Author: Laurence A. Rickels
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780816633913
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
Bela Lugosi may -- as the eighties gothic rock band Bauhaus sang -- be dead, but the vampire lives on. A nightmarish figure dwelling somewhere between genuine terror and high camp, a morbid repository for the psychic projections of diverse cultures, an endlessly recyclable mass-media icon, the vampire is an enduring object of fascination, fear, ridicule, and reverence. In The Vampire Lectures, Laurence A. Rickels sifts through the rich mythology of vampirism, from medieval folklore to Marilyn Manson, to explore the profound and unconscious appeal of the undead. Based on the course Rickels has taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for several years (a course that is itself a cult phenomenon on campus), The Vampire Lectures reflects Rickels's unique lecture style and provides a lively history of vampirism in legend, literature, and film. Rickels unearths a trove that includes eyewitness accounts of vampire attacks; burial rituals and sexual taboos devised to keep vampirism at bay; Hungarian countess Elisabeth Bathory's use of girls' blood in her sadistic beauty regimen; Bram Stoker's Dracula, with its turn-of-the-century media technologies; F. W. Murnau's haunting Nosferatu; and crude, though intense, straight-to-video horror films such as Subspecies. He makes intuitive, often unexpected connections among these sometimes wildly disparate sources. More than simply a compilation of vampire lore, however, The Vampire Lectures makes an original and intellectually rigorous contribution to literary and psychoanalytic theory, identifying the subconscious meanings, complex symbolism, and philosophical arguments -- particularly those of Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche -- embeddedin vampirism and gothic literature.

Soul in Seoul

Soul in Seoul PDF Author: Crystal S. Anderson
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 149683013X
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
K-pop (Korean popular music) reigns as one of the most popular music genres in the world today, a phenomenon that appeals to listeners of all ages and nationalities. In Soul in Seoul: African American Popular Music and K-pop, Crystal S. Anderson examines the most important and often overlooked aspect of K-pop: the music itself. She demonstrates how contemporary K-pop references and incorporates musical and performative elements of African American popular music culture as well as the ways that fans outside of Korea understand these references. K-pop emerged in the 1990s with immediate global aspirations, combining musical elements from Korean and foreign cultures, particularly rhythm and blues genres of black American popular music. Korean solo artists and groups borrow from and cite instrumentation and vocals of R&B genres, especially hip-hop. They also enhance the R&B tradition by utilizing Korean musical strategies. These musical citational practices are deemed authentic by global fans who function as part of K-pop’s music press and promotional apparatus. K-pop artists also cite elements of African American performance in Korean music videos. These disrupt stereotyped representations of Asian and African American performers. Through this process K-pop has arguably become a branch of a global R&B tradition. Anderson argues that Korean pop groups participate in that tradition through cultural work that enacts a global form of crossover and by maintaining forms of authenticity that cannot be faked, and furthermore propel the R&B tradition beyond the black-white binary.

The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones PDF Author: Jack Wolf
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0143123823
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 561

Book Description
The explosive and controversial debut novel by a major new voice in fiction Meet Tristan Hart, a brilliant young man of means. The year is 1751, and at the age of twenty he leaves home to study medicine at the great hospital of St. Thomas in London. It will be a momentous year for the intellectually ambitious Mr. Hart, who, in addition to being a student of Locke and Descartes and a promising young physician, is also, alas, psychotic. He is obsessed with the nature of pain and medically preventing it, but—equally strong and much harder to control—is his obsession with causing it. Desperate to understand his deviant desires before they are his undoing, he uses the new tools of the age—reason and science and skepticism—to plumb the depths of his own dark mind. Profoundly imaginative, unexpectedly funny, and with a strange but moving love story at its heart, The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones is an oddly beautiful and daring novel about the relationship between the mind and body, sex, madness, pain, and the existence of God.
