Prophecy in the Ancient Near East

Prophecy in the Ancient Near East PDF Author: Jonathan Stökl
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004229930
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
Since the 1990s there has been an emphasis on the study of ancient Israelite prophecy in its ancient Near East context. Prophecy in the Ancient Near East is the first book-length study that compares prophecy in the ancient Near East by focusing on texts from Mari, the Neo-Assyrian State Archives, and the Hebrew Bible. The author analyzes prophecy in each culture independently before comparisons are made. This method demonstrates how prophecy is a part of the wider system of divination, but also shows where scholarship has unduly imported concepts found in one corpus to the other two. This method, for example, calls into question the supposed link between music and prophecy from the Hebrew Bible to the ancient Near East. This work provides an up-to-date analysis of ancient Near Eastern, including Israelite and Judean, prophecy to scholars and students alike. "I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in prophecy in Israel and the ancient Near East." Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, University of Aberdeen, Review of Biblical Literature "The content of Jonathan Stökl’s book...testifies to the value of the book for the studies of prophecy in the ancient Near East." Wojciech Pikor, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, The Biblical Annals

Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
The Ancient Scriptures and the Modern Jew is a religious work written by David Baron, a Jewish convert to Christianity, in which he states the case of the general condition of his nation at the end of the nineteenth century. The work is divided into two parts. The first part consists of related expositions of some of the most remarkable prophetic statements in the ancient Scriptures. They are independent Bible Studies of very sincere and important subjects, but organized in a progressive order, presenting that the turning centuries unfold an everlasting purpose, and that prophecy was history written in advance. The second part is written with the goal to present, from a Christian and Bible standpoint, an all-round view of The Jewish Question, which will see the pressure rising upon the attention of the nations, and the development of which must be observed with the highest possible interest.

Book Description
Using comparative anthropology to get at the social dimensions of prophetic activity, Robert Wilson's study brings the study of Isrealite prophecy to a new level. Looking at both modern societies and Ancient Near Eastern ones, Wilson sketches the nature of prophetic activity, its social location, and its social functions. He then shows how these features appear in Israelite prophecy and sketches a history of prophecy in Israel.

Restoring the Fortunes of Zion

Restoring the Fortunes of Zion PDF Author: Rob Yule
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1512789917
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
Restoring the Fortunes of Zion tells the dramatic story of the reemergence of Israel onto the stage of modern history from the genocidal fury of the Holocaust to its extraordinary survival in face of regional hostility and global contempt. It shows how the return of the Jewish people from two millennia of exile realizes with uncanny accuracy the visions of the biblical prophets, and explores what this signifies for the future. Rob Yule brings together accessible scholarship biblical, historical, geographical, political and theological with strong advocacy, to create a book that I found riveting and moving. I commend Restoring the Fortunes of Zion to all those who wish for a clearer sense of Israel, its emergence from desolation to vitality and those who helped and hindered its progress. It is an exceptionally valuable resource. Dame Lesley Max, Auckland The publication of Restoring the Fortunes of Zion is extraordinarily timely and vital for our understanding of current world events. It enables us to better understand from a biblical perspective what has happened in Israels past, what is happening in Israel today, as well as what is going to happen to Israel in the future. Revd. Murray Dixon, Palmerston North Rob Yules book weaves together a carefully researched, erudite, scholarly but eminently readable and fascinating account of Israel. He intertwines and interprets the history, politics, military strategy, theology and culture of the region, in the past, present and future! The sweep of his vision is as breath-taking as the intriguing subject matter that he covers. Revd. Owen Hoskin, Auckland
