Old English Glasses

Old English Glasses PDF Author: Albert Hartshorne
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331614299
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 782

Book Description
Excerpt from Old English Glasses: An Account of Glass Drinking Vessels in England, From Early Times to the End of the Eighteenth Century; With Introductory Notices, Original Documents, Etc IN the following work, which comprises the history of a subject never before undertaken for England, the author has primarily endeavoured to provide information concerning drinking-glasses and glass-making in this country from Roman times to 1800. Dealing first with objects in vitreous pastes found in Britain, the flaw (mean of Strabo, the aggry beads, - some of them remnants, apparently, of Phoenician commerce, - Roman mosaic beads, and their quasi-imitations the beads of anglo-saxon times, are successively touched upon. The evidences of glass-furnaces in Britain during the Roman domina tion are spoken of; and while the large and varied number of drinking-vessels of anglo-saxon times are discussed historically, 'an endeavour is made for the first time to bring them into order, to classify, and to date them. The imported Oriental glasses a la facon de Damas, a la Moresque - are not overlooked, and the collateral rise and progress of painted glass in England, from the middle of the twelfth century to the time of the English painted windows of the Chapel of King's, of the first quarter of the sixteenth, is shown. Testimonies are adduced indicating the continuation of the manufacture of glass drinking-vessels in England during this long period, and up to the middle of the sixteenth century, illustrated by the evidence of inventories and a few actual vessels. Book Description
Excerpt from Through Old Rose Glasses, and Other Stories Gabrielle felt the cool, earth-scented dawn against her face. The wondering starlight, the ghostly sand road leading off among the pines, the shadowy closed station, all bewildered her. At dusk the evening before, she had left the crowded, lighted city, had gone to sleep and dreamed. Still in the dusk, she had been called up and left on the lonely station platform where she stood. "Your trunk is already in the carriage," said the general, picking up her valise. "This way. Miss Cameron came, Peter." A white-haired negro driver bowed and replied, "We suhtainly is glad to see you, miss," while the general helped her into the carriage. Gabrielle did not know who the general was or why he was meeting her, until he said, "I am an old friend of your mother's, dear Miss Gabrielle. She was greatly admired in Virginia, and I one of her warmest admirers. Miss Sarah sent me to bring you safely to Sweet Hall. I am General Brandon."
