Mind Builders

Mind Builders PDF Author: Paul Fleisher
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313090645
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
Like the nationally known Destination Imagination competition, Mind Builders offers simple engineering problems to be solved by student teams. It begins with a few exercises to introduce the team concept. These are followed by ten warm up problems that can be completed within an hour or less, with little advanced preparation. Finally, teachers choose one of 12 engineering challenges to be completed by teams over an extended period, and presented to judges on Challenge Day. For more than twenty years, the Richmond, Virginia Public Schools' program for gifted students has conducted an interscholastic competition similar to the nationally known competition, Destination Imagination. In the featured contest of this yearly event, teams of five students present solutions to engineering problems that they have worked on for several weeks or more. The problems are multidisciplinary, including elements of research, writing, mathematics and science, and a creative dramatic or musical presentation. Each challenge requires just a few inexpensive materials and a minimum of equipment. In addition to their use with gifted students and others in interscholastic competitions, these problems make excellent challenges for classroom use, or even for use with extracurricular or recreational organizations such as Scout groups or Boys and Girls Clubs. They are written to include basic skills from the core curriculum, and require students to work cooperatively to solve problems with multiple solutions. This book offers 12 simple engineering problems plus ten warm up problems to be solved by student teams. Each challenge includes detailed specifications, hints for teachers and coaches, scoring rubrics, a list of references that will help students get started on the problem, and a check-list for administering each competition.

The Body Builders

The Body Builders PDF Author: Adam Piore
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0062347160
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
A Fareed Zakaria GPS Book of the Week: “An exhilarating look at the cutting edge of bioengineering. . . . a mind-bending read.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) For millennia, humans have tried—and often failed—to master nature and transcend our limits. But this has started to change. The new scientific frontier is the human body: The greatest engineers of our generation have turned their sights inward, and their work is beginning to revolutionize mankind. In The Body Builders, Adam Piore takes us on a fascinating journey into the field of bioengineering—which can be used to reverse engineer, rebuild, and augment human beings—and paints a vivid portrait of the people at its center. Chronicling the ways new technology has retooled our physical expectations and mental processes, Piore visits people who have regrown parts of their fingers and legs in the wake of terrible traumas; tries on a muscle suit that allows him to lift ninety pounds with his fingertips; dips into the race to create “Viagra for the brain”; and shadows the doctors trying to give mute patients the ability to communicate telepathically. As science continues to lay bare the mysteries of human performance, it is helping us to see—and exist—above our expectations. The Body Builders goes beyond the headlines and the hype to reveal the inner workings and the outer reaches of our bodies and minds, and explore how new developments are changing, and will forever change, what is possible for humankind. Weaving powerful storytelling with groundbreaking science, The Body Builders explores the current revolution in human augmentation, which is helping us triumph over the limitations and constraints we’ve long accepted as an inevitable part of being human. “Piore writes gracefully, and with deep insight, about complex scientific endeavors that could ease human suffering but are fraught with myriad ethical perils.” —Publishers Weekly
