Book Description
Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 45 In passing, it is interesting to Observe that nobody who hired Mary seems to have inquired personally into her references. It seems that the names Of some of her former employers were available, but it appears not to be the custom of the patrons of fashion able employment bureaus to inquire deeply into the personal history of the servants. Mary always was accepted on the recommendation of the proprietor. He was trusted to run a genuine intelligence bureau and it is but right to say that, on the whole, he discharged his Obligations admirably. The effort to work out Typhoid Mary's history was only partly successful. There were many false clews and puzzling circumstances. The mystery which had at first surrounded her continued and was often completely baffling. Sometimes it was somebody's memory which was at fault - few housekeepers seem to know anything about their cooks, much less recall the food which they have eaten weeks and months ago. Yet this information, in some instances, was indispensable. Sometimes it appeared that persons were deliberately refusing to tell what they knew. Twice, I think I talked with members of Mary's family, but I could never be sure of It. Servants who had been asso cisted with her never gave any help. Try as I would, Typhoid Mary's whereabouts for only parts of the ten years before the Oyster Bay outbreak could be determined with unmistakable certainty. About two years of the preceding five remained unaccounted for. In ten years She is known to have worked for eight families and in seven of these typhoid had occurred. She had always escaped in the epidemics with which she had been connected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 46: February, 1920 Chronic constipation is a common complaint in the Army. The failure to prevent it invites attention. In civil life it is impossible to get at the true facts of this common ailment or to control or correct it. In the Army comes the opportunity to get the facts, and to correct and prevent this unphysiological condition. Army men are a selected group, admission to which depends upon the result of a careful physical and medical examination. Every act, fact and feature of the soldier's daily life is controlled and regulated - food, exercise, clothing, work and sleep. Both the men and the conditions are closely supervised every hour of the twenty-four hours of every day. Army regulations deter mine and control every act in the daily life of the soldier, save one. Irregular or missed bowel action not infrequently unbalances the day's work. Retained and accumulated intestinal waste held within the body lowers fitness; it puts a drag upon physical and mental energy. Habitual constipation makes low-powered, substandard men. Book Description
Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, 1923, Vol. 53: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Acting upon this hint, Flexner put Amoss and Webster upon the study of experimental or artificially induced epidemics of mouse typhoid in mouse villages during 1919 - 20. These villages were made up of cages of 5 mice each, placed arow on metal Shelves and kept sanitary by exclusion of insects and vermin and by weekly cleans ing. Thus conditions obtaining in average houses and city streets were reproduced. Spread of infection was left to accidental feed ing or transmission by the hands cleansing the cages. Exposure of the normal mice to a few mice fed on. The culture was found to set up sporadic outbreaks of low mortality and low cage-attack rates and self-limited in time. Epidemic outbreaks were induced by bringing in fresh material. As in the accidental epidemic of 1918 - 20, it was found that whenever a new increment of fresh mice was brought in, the older non-susceptible mice were attacked along with the new susceptibles. Successive epidemic waves, each self-limited in time, were set up by the repetition of this process, until different groups of old surviving non-susceptibles were wiped out, the ultimate survivors thus coming from later increments. Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 43: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; July, 1918 We can also appreciate more fully the necessity Of the utmost care in treatment to preclude delays and reverses in the course Of repair Of every fracture coming into our hands. There is no other type Of wound which requires a longer time to repair before the soldier can be returned as a fighting man, and few others more liable to render him permanently noneffective. In addition to the classical causes Of delayed union, such as syphilis, scurvy, mal-position, interposition Of soft parts, infection and interference with circulation, we have to consider the loss Of substance, either from primary trauma by shell fragments or from Operative procedures, the necrosis Of poorly nourished fragments. Book Description
Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 46: January, 1920 The chief function of such a hospital is that of evacuation. Tch hinges on a realization of this. In addition, medical care should be administered to the maximum possible without conflicting with the chief function. Professional care demands a more or less lengthy stay in hospital following operation, and it is an accepted fact that the earlier surgical intervention can be given, thereby diminishing the chances of sepsis, the greater the number of recoveries and the shorter the period of convalescence. But these units must be more or less mobile so that the number of beds available will be limited by transportation facilities. An allowance of a thousand beds will be the maximum possible in the majority of such organizations. Therefore any scheme of operation must be so planned as to hold in hospital after operation only such cases as are absolutely necessary. Here the chief function of evacuation and optimum medical care conflict. And any plan must also prepare for the maximum intake which should not exceed one thousand cases in any twenty-four-hour interval provided the General Staff has had the opportunity_to make provision beforehand.
