Book Description
Excerpt from The Micro-Organisms of the Soil The purpose of this volume is to give the broad outlines of our present knowledge of the relationships Of the population of living organisms in the soil to one another and to the surface vegetation. It is shown that there is a close relationship with vegetation, the soil population being dependent almost entirely on the growing plant for energy material, while the plant is equally dependent on the activities Of the soil population for removing the residues of previous generations of plants and for the continued production in the soil of simple materials, such as nitrates, which are necessary to its growth. It is also shown, however, that the soil population takes toll of the plant nutrients and that some of its members may directly injure the growing plant. Principles of Soil Microbiology (Classic Reprint)

Principles of Soil Microbiology (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Selman Abraham Waksman
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781396177835
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 966

Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Soil Microbiology This book is a collection of known facts concerning microorganisms found in the soil and their activities; it is a study of the literature dealing with the science in question; it is an interpretation of the facts already presented; it indicates the various lines of investigation and notes where further information is especially wanted. Soil microbiology is a science which is at the very base of our understanding of agricultural processes and the practice of agriculture; it comprises a number of sciences. The book may, therefore, be looked upon more as an introduction to further research rather than as an ordinary text-book; as of help to those work ing in the allied sciences, who are desirous of obtaining some information concerning the soil population and its activities. If this volume will help to disclose to the reader some of the numerous interrelated processes in the soil, if it will present in a clearer light to the chemist, the physiologist, the botanist, the bacteriologist and the zoologist the nature of the many scientific and practical problems awaiting the investigator, if it contributes in a small measure toward making soil science an exact science, the author will feel that he has been amply rewarded. Soils and Their Properties (Classic Reprint)

Soils and Their Properties (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William Fream
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484819664
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in promoting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual. All that is attempted, there fore, In 'the following pages is to trace soils back to their parent rocks, to indicate some of their more important physical and chemical properties, and to give a brief account of the distribution of soils within the British Isles. It is proposed to follow this Volume with another, in the same series, upon the practical management of the soil.
