Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Drawing on the unparalleled Howard Greenberg Collection, Viewpoints presents some seventy-five iconic images that have come to define their times Over the course of the twentieth century, photography evolved as an art form while serving as an eyewitness to social, cultural and political change. This book presents some seventy-five iconic images that came to define their times, and explores the stories behind the moments they recorded and the photographers who captured them. Among these beautifully reproduced images - many from unique vintage prints - are powerful visual testimonies of Depression-era America, politically engaged street photography, definitive celebrity portraits, celebrations of the performing arts, harrowing visions of war and compelling depictions of the Civil Rights movement. Drawing on the unparalleled Howard Greenberg Collection, recently acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Viewpoints invites us to take a fresh look at celebrated photographs by such masters of the medium as Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke- White, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and Edward Steichen.

She who Tells a Story

She who Tells a Story PDF Author: Kristen Gresh
Publisher: MFA Publications
ISBN: 9780878468041
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
She Who Tells a Story introduces the pioneering work of twelve leading women photographers from Iran and the Arab world: Jananne Al-Ani, Boushra Almutawakel, Gohar Dashti, Rana El Nemr, Lalla Essaydi, Shadi Ghadirian, Tanya Habjouqa, Rula Halawani, Nermine Hammam, Rania Matar, Shirin Neshat and Newsha Tavakolian. As the Middle East has undergone unparalleled change over the past twenty years, and national and personal identities have been dismantled and rebuilt, these artists have tackled the very notion of representation with passion and power. Their provocative images, which range in style from photojournalism to staged and manipulated visions, explore themes of gender stereotypes, war and peace and personal life, all the while confronting nostalgic Western notions about women of the Orient and exploring the complex political and social landscapes of their home regions. Enhanced with biographical and interpretive essays, and including more than 100 reproductions of photographs and film and video stills, this book challenges us to set aside preconceptions about this part of the world and share in the vision of a group of vibrant artists as they claim the right to tell their own stories in images of great sophistication, expressiveness and beauty.

The Egyptian Collection at Norwich Castle Museum

The Egyptian Collection at Norwich Castle Museum PDF Author: Faye Kalloniatis
Publisher: Oxbow Books
ISBN: 1789251990
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
The Egyptian Collection at Norwich Castle Museum represents the first full publication of this important collection which contains several outstanding objects. Part 1 begins with an outline of the acquisition history of the Egyptian collection and its display within Norwich Castle in 1894, when it was converted from a prison to a museum. The collection was largely acquired between the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth centuries. Its most prominent donor was Flaxman Spurrell, whose varied collection of flints, faience beads and necklaces as well as Late Antique cloths was obtained from Sir Flinders Petrie. Also prominent was the Norwich-based Colman family, most notable for its manufacture of mustard, whose collection was purchased in Egypt during the late-C19. Also included in this part are essays on several of the museum’s outstanding items – Ipu’s shroud, a rare early 18th Dynasty example with fragments also held in Cairo; the 22nd Dynasty finely decorated and well-preserved cartonnage and wooden lid of the priest, Ankh-hor; and the exceptional model granary of Nile clay painted with lively scenes, one showing the owner, Intef, playing senet. Part 2 is a detailed catalogue of the complete collection. It is organised into sections with objects grouped together mainly according to type – stelae, shabtis, scarabs, jewellery, amulets, vessels, flints, lamps, inscribed Book of the Dead fragments, metal figurines, and Late Antique cloths; and also according to function – such as cosmetics& grooming, and architectural & furniture elements. The inscribed materials have all been translated and individual entries give examples or parallels. Seventy colour plates illustrate each object.
