The Method of Characteristics for Three-dimensional Real-gas Flows

The Method of Characteristics for Three-dimensional Real-gas Flows PDF Author: Charles R. Strom

Category : Aerodynamics

Pages : 136

Book Description
The method of characteristics is formulated for the computation of the supersonic flow of an inviscid, reacting gas over a smooth three-dimensional body. Various methods of constructing networks of bicharacteristic lines are examined from the point of view of numerical stability and accuracy. A new method of forming the network, which consists of projecting forward along streamlines from data points on specified data planes, is found to be most easily adopted to the particular requirements of nonequilibrium chemistry. The general method was coded for the IBM 7090 computer and the program demonstrated for the case of an ideal gas. Calculations were made for the case of an ideal gas. Calculations were made for the flow about a spherical-tip 15 degree half-angle cone at 10 degree angle of attack and a generalized elliptical body at zero incidence. Since the program yields the pressure distribution along specified streamlines, it is straightforward, in principle, to link it to a finite-rate chemistry stream tube program to treat three-dimensional, nonequilibrium flows. Book Description
Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 9 presents the vibrational characteristics of certain aircraft. This book supplements the comprehensive account of matrix methods of structural analysis. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the different schemes of the numerical method of characteristics for calculating three-dimensional steady supersonic gas flow about bodies moving at incidence. This text then examines the flow of a perfect gas and provides the generalization for the case of equilibrium and non-equilibrium flow of real gas. Other chapters consider the various aspects of the aerodynamic design of aircraft and discuss the application of modern computer methods to fluid mechanics. This book discusses as well the prospects for further development of the existing types and for the establishment of the as yet hypothetical types of aircraft. The final chapter shows how the evolution of the aerodynamic shape leads to a complete spectrum of major types of aircraft. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Recent Contributions to the Method of Characteristics for Three-dimensional Problems in Gas Dynamics

Recent Contributions to the Method of Characteristics for Three-dimensional Problems in Gas Dynamics PDF Author: Maurice Holt
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Gas dynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 44

Book Description
The numerical method of characteristics for problems in three or more independent variables are reviewed. Particular emphasis is laid on recent methods developed in Germany; notably the optimal characteristic method of Bruhn + Haack and Schaetz, and the near characteristics method of Sauer. In all these methods, difference equations are established in their most compact form and, at each point, all outer directional derivatives are in one plane. In Sauer's method, this plane is always parallel to a fixed plane. The methods are all derived rigorously and satisfy conditions of equivalence, uniqueness, and convergence. The optimal characteristics method has been applied very successfully to the problem of unsteady flow through a Laval nozzle. (Modified author abstract).

Two Dimensional Or Axially Symmetric Real Gas Flows by the Method of Characteristics, Part Iv. Nonequilibrium Flow Research

Two Dimensional Or Axially Symmetric Real Gas Flows by the Method of Characteristics, Part Iv. Nonequilibrium Flow Research PDF Author: Donald W. Eastman

Book Description
The method of characteristics equations for twodimensional or axisymmetric non-equilibrium real gas flow is formulated for machine computation. The basic equations were derived assuming rotational, inviscid flow of a reacting multi-component gas. An approximate model of dissociated non-equilibrium air is presented which is ideal for use with the method of characteristics. Results from a simple one-dimensional program which uses this model of air compare very closely with results from a program which uses a much more sophisticated model. (Author).
