Book Description
Completely revised and updated with 18 new chapters, this second edition includes contributions from over 75 international experts. Also, a Technical Review Board reviewed all manuscripts for accuracy and currency. Focusing on toxic substance and how they affect the ecosystems worldwide, the book presents methods for quantifying and measuring ecotoxicological effects in the field and in the lab, as well as methods for estimating, predicting, and modeling in ecotoxicology studies. This is the definitive reference for students, researchers, consultants, and other professionals in the environmental sciences, toxicology, chemistry, biology, and ecology - in academia, industry, and government.

Environmental Contaminants in Wildlife

Environmental Contaminants in Wildlife PDF Author: James P. Meador
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781566700719
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 516

Book Description
Many books have been written about the effects of toxic chemicals on wildlife, but none has focused on the practical question, "How much of a chemical in the tissues of an animal is harmful?" This book deals exclusively with that question. This comprehensive reference will certainly become the standard resource on the topic, offering authoritative and sound advice on many environmental contaminants. With chapters written by outstanding experts in their respective fields, this is not only a scholarly collection of discussions on different chemicals, but, for those who have the day-to-day task of evaluating the harm of environment contaminants to wildlife, this book will provide answers on, for example, how to interpret 1 ppm lead in the liver of a duck or fish. The authors explain the snags of interpreting data that are sometimes conflicting or insufficient, providing the reader with helpful advice on how to cope with such data. Each chapter reviews literature on a specific chemical, followed by a easy-to-understand summary providing technical guidance. For many years this book will remain the preeminent reference on how to interpret contaminant levels of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, PAHs, metals, selenium, and fluorides in wildlife.

Mercury in the Biogeochemical Cycle

Mercury in the Biogeochemical Cycle PDF Author: Marc Marcotte
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364260160X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 411

Book Description
Nowadays, major environmental issues are the object of large public debates de spite the fact that scientific knowledge is often insufficient to draw unequivocal conclusions. Such is the case in the ongoing debate regarding the specific contri butions of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and of natural climate changes to global warming. At least 10 to 20 years of additional observations will be re quired, before we will be able to conclude, with certainty, on this subject. In the mean time, and as directed by their immediate interests, people will continue to promote contradictory opinions. The media are, in part, responsible for perpetuat ing such debates in that they convey indiscriminately the opinion of highly credi ble scientists as that of dogmatic researchers, the latter, unfortunately too often expressing working hypotheses as established facts. Naturally, in a similarly mis informed manner, pressure groups tend to support the researcher whose opinions most closely represent either their particular ideological battles or their economic interests and, hence, in their own way, add further to the confusion and obscurity of the debate. Only a few years ago, mercury (Hg)contamination in hydroelectric reservoirs was the object of such media and social biases. At the time, analytical data used to support the discourse were themselves uncertain and numerous hypotheses, often times fanciful, were proposed and hastily "delivered" to the public.

Mercury Mitigative Measures Related to Hydroelectric Reservoirs

Mercury Mitigative Measures Related to Hydroelectric Reservoirs PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 12

Book Description
The LaGrande hydroelectric complex in the James Bay region of Quebec comprises nine generating stations and requires the impounding of eight reservoirs, involving flooding of over 4,000 square miles of land surface. Flooding of land which contains large quantities of organic material leads to transformation by bacteria of sedimentary inorganic mercury into methylmercury, which in turn bioaccumulates in fish. This paper notes the increase in mercury levels in major fish species in the LaGrande 2 Reservoir and discusses the implications for local Cree populations, who rely on fish as an important food source. The paper evaluates a number of at-source remedial measures aimed at reducing mercury levels in reservoir fish, and describes compensation measures adopted to reduce Cree exposure to mercury while ensuring their traditional way of life. The paper concludes with a case study of the Eastmain-1 project and the compensation measures proposed.

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment - Scientific Report

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment - Scientific Report PDF Author: Arctic Climate Impact Assessment
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521865093
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1053

Book Description
The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social, and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels. Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was prepared by an international team of over 300 scientists, experts, and knowledgeable members of indigenous communities. The report has been thoroughly researched, is fully referenced, and provides the first comprehensive evaluation of arctic climate change, changes in ultraviolet radiation and their impacts for the region and for the world. It is illustrated in full color throughout. The results provided the scientific foundations for the ACIA synthesis report - Impacts of a Warming Arctic - published by Cambridge University Press in 2004.
