The Memoirs of Sir John Reresby

Book Description
Excerpt from The Memoirs of Sir John Reresby: Of Thrybergh, Bart, M. P. For York, &C., 1634-1689 The Memoirs of Sir John Reresby (so called) were first published in the year 1734; they were reprinted in 1813. About two years ago the original manuscript from which they were derived came into the possession of the Trustees of the British Museum, and it was found, upon comparing it with the printed version, that not only had great alterations been made in Reresby's language and manner of narration, but also that much interesting matter had been altogether omitted. The present edition has been undertaken to supply these omissions, and to restore the exact words of the writer, - with the result, it may unhesitatingly be said, of producing a substantially new work. Among the valuable family papers preserved at Spencer House, St. James's, is an interesting series of letters from Sir John Reresby to the Marquis of Halifax, the use of which in the preparation of this volume was most courteously allowed by Earl Spencer. Extracts from these letters will be found in the notes. The editor is also under great obligations to Mr. Edward A. Bond, of the British Museum, in whose custody the Reresby papers now are, for the facilities afforded him in transcribing those manuscripts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
