Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity The last words of a book are those which meet the reader's eye first. As that is the case, a preface generally says what the book is meant to be, and in how far the writer's intentions have been realised in the work. Most prefaces are apologies. This work on mental defects and diseases in their legal relations is intended as a practical treatise more complete and systematic than the chapters devoted to this subject in medico-legal text-books, or than those monographs on limited portions of it which have from time to time appeared. Powerfully affects, or may affect, the knowledge by which our actions are guided, the feelings by which our actions are prompted, the will by which our actions are performed, whether the word will is taken to mean volition or a settled judgment Of the reason acting as a standing con trol on such actions as relate to it. The means by which these effects are produced are unnatural feelings; delu sions or false opinions as to facts; hallucinations or deceptions Of the senses; impulses to particular acts or classes of acts; and in some cases, it is asserted, a specific physical inability to recognize the difference between moral good and evil as a motive for doing good and avoiding evil. Book Description
Excerpt from Report on the Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity, 1858 Preliminary remarks. - The subject of insanity, in all its rela tions, is one of the most interesting that can engage the attention of the physician, the philanthropist, or the medical jurist; and one of the most brilliant achievements of the medical profession in modern times, is the reform which it has effected in the cure and treatment of that unfortunate class of our fellow-beings, who are afflicted with insanity; in rescuing them not merely from the neg lect, but from the cruelty and abuse which they were formerly made to suffer. The name of Pinel, who was the first to remove the chains and shackles from the insane, should be ranked with that of Harvey and Jenner, prominent among the benefactors of mankind. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity, or Forensic Psychiatry, Vol. 2 Ethyl alcohol, Spirit of wine, is commercially assumed to be the base of intoxicating drinks, and the purest of these is capable of working great havoc when abused but on account of the demand for cheap liquor in vast quantities, what is known to chemists as the more poisonous amyl alcohol (potato spirit or fusel oil) is sub stituted for portions of the less harmful ethyl or vinic alcohol. The aroma, or bouquet, of liquors is largely due to certain others of the more poisonous amyl and butyl alcohols, notably the acetic and valeric. All too often, by the time it reaches the average consumer, liquor contains, in addition to the alcohol, diluents to increase bulk, and articles to give it false color, odor, and taste. In the English licensing act of 187 2' there is a schedule of substances called deleterious ingredients, found to have been used in adulterating intoxicating liquors. They are cocculus Indicus, common salt, copperas, Opium, Indian hemp, strychnine, tobacco, darnel seed, logwood, salts of zinc or lead, and alum; and there are also added correctives of acidity, such as litharge, lime, soda, potash astringents like catechu, oak-bark, and sloe leaves; earths for decolorizing; sweetening agents, and ethers for fia voring. Most of these articles are unwholesome, to say the least, and tend to debilitate and otherwise create depraved bodily states.
