Book Description
Excerpt from The McCloskey Primer Practical results and realized ideals depend, in beginning reading, almost wholly upon the selection and the arrange ment of material which combines in the highest degree power to attract, technical simplicity, and literary value. The material which best combines these three essential characteristics is the cumulative tale, the tale that re peats at each step all that has gone before. This curious type of literary structure is highly dramatic and richly human. It is usually overflowing with humor, and it moves with delightful celerity. These are the qualities which, with the amusing repetition, justify the place of the cumulative tale as an unfailing source of children's love and laughter. Moreover, the fact that among all races and for many ages these tales have satisfied child hunger for romance and for wonder, is convincing proof of their power to meet some special need and to make an everlasting appeal. The Baldwin Primer (Classic Reprint)

The Baldwin Primer (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: May Kirk
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780259508434
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
Excerpt from The Baldwin Primer The lessons in this book have been prepared in accordance with well-established principles of mental science and child study. In addition to the ideas common to most primers have adopted the principle of progressive expansion, whereby the more complex notions of language, number, and form, are built up by successive steps from elementary ideas. In teaching words the synthetical and analytical methods are followed simultane ously. The letters of the alphabet, as set tasks, are deeply impressed on the mind, while at the same time the child learns to read by recognition of words as wholes; finally he instinctively unites the results of both methods to a complete and detailed understanding of the words. Another recognized principle is that of proceeding from the known to the unknown; in a primer the most familiar objects should form the basis of the lessons. The script alphabet is as important as the usual Roman alphabet. The child should learn to read both from the start. Do not begin the writing lessons too soon; they should be preceded by a considerable amount of free-arm movement at the blackboard or with the brush. The first lessons in writing must be on a large scale, with movements free from the shoulder; a brush dipped in ink, a piece of chalk on the blackboard, a good sized pencil and the like are the proper materials. It is not yet sufficiently understood by teachers that the movements of writing cannot be successfully learned until the child has gained control over his arms, hands, and fingers. The stick laying, paper folding, modeling, and the songs have this end in view in addition to the particular facts they are designed to teach. The Brooks Primer (Classic Reprint)

The Brooks Primer (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Clarence F. Carroll
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266468332
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
Excerpt from The Brooks Primer The lessons of this little Primer are based upon four interests com mon to all normal children, toys, games, animal life, and phenomena of the changing seasons. The forms of the lessons are those of soliloquy and dialogue. It is presupposed, in either case, that the child first plays himself into the spirit and meaning of the lesson to be read. Sentence wholes are presented from the beginning, in the belief that the habit to be most used in life should be the first established. These first sentences are repeated many times in subsequent lessons. Difficult words and phrases are treated in a similar manner. By this means, children become familiar with sentence forms and with a good working vocabulary without the uninteresting and wearisome drill upon detached words, which, in many schoolrooms, makes sad encroach ments upon the reading period. The Rose Primer (Classic Reprint)

The Rose Primer (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Edna Henry Lee Turpin
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780259500575
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
Excerpt from The Rose Primer There are never more than two new words on a page, only one hundred and ninety-eight in the book. These words are carefully repeated, most of them being used' ten or more times. Every new word is given in both script and print, and there are frequent script exercises for tracing and copying. The sentences are short and simple, and the construction is varied as much as possible, to avoid the formation of singsong and monotonous reading habits. The child, confronted by the least possible labor in word getting, can easily master these pages. On completing them he has acquired a small but serviceable vocabulary of common words, and can begin any well-graded first reader with ease and intelligence.
