Excerpt from The Masque of Mary and Other Poems An open Court in the Temple of Jerusalem surrounded by cloisters of white marble. In the centre a fountain playing. On the lefty leaning against a pillar, the Blessed Virgin Mary, as a child, fast asleep; and at her side vases containing rose-trees in bloom, and delicate aromatic plants. Angels around keeping watch. Dawn slowly breaks. Distant chant of Priests. Ithuriel. (Chief of the Angelic Guard.) Comrades, our sacred charge, Who all night long upon this marble pavement, Like a pale lily bent, was pouring forth Her most ambrosial sighs into the ear Of her eternal Father, - now at length Has yielded up her eyelids to repose. Morning returns emblazoning with gold Yon eastern pinnacle. The hideous storm, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nothing by Design

Nothing by Design PDF Author: Mary Jo Salter
Publisher: Knopf
ISBN: 0385349807
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 27

Book Description
A beautiful collection of verse––both light and dark, elegiac and affirmative––from one of our most admired poets. The title Nothing by Design is taken from Salter’s villanelle “Complaint for Absolute Divorce,” in which we’re asked to entertain the thought of a no-fault universe. The wary search for peace, personal and public, is a constant theme in poems as varied as “Our Friends the Enemy,” about the Christmas football match between German and British soldiers in 1914; “The Afterlife,” in which Egyptian tomb figurines labor to serve the dead; and “Voice of America,” where Salter returns to the Saint Petersburg of her exiled friend, the late Joseph Brodsky. A section of charming light verse serves as counterpoint to another series entitled “Bed of Letters,” in which Salter addresses the end of a long marriage. Artfully designed, with a highly intentional music, these poems movingly give form to the often unfathomable, yet very real, presence of nothingness and loss in our lives.

The Poems of Shelley: Volume Three

The Poems of Shelley: Volume Three PDF Author: Jack Donovan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317905148
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 941

Book Description
Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major Romantic poets, and wrote what is critically recognised as some of the finest lyric poetry in the English language. This is the third volume of the five-volume The Poems of Shelley, which presents all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between autumn 1819 and autumn 1820. The poems written in response to the political crisis in England following the ‘Peterloo’ massacre in August 1819 feature largely, among them The Mask of Anarchy and 'An Ode (Arise, arise, arise!)'. The popular songs, which Shelley intended to gather into a volume to inspire reformers from the labouring classes, several accompanied by significantly new textual material recovered from draft manuscripts, are included, as are the important political works 'Ode to Liberty', 'Ode to Naples' and Oedipus Tyrannus, Shelley's burlesque Greek tragedy on the Queen Caroline affair. Other major poems featured include 'The Sensitive-Plant', 'Ode to the West Wind', 'Letter to Maria Gisborne', an exuberant translation from the ancient Greek of the Homeric 'Hymn to Mercury', and the brilliantly inventive 'The Witch of Atlas'. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies, a chronology of Shelley’s life, and indexes to titles and first lines. Leigh Hunt's informative Preface of 1832 to The Mask of Anarchy is also included as an Appendix. The volumes of The Poems of Shelley form the most comprehensive edition of Shelley's poetry available to students and scholars.
