Excerpt from The Manuscripts of the Marquess Townshend Lord Derwentwater, and to others still remembered for their share in the rebellion. There is a good letter, too, from General George Carpenter, dated at Nottingham on the 23rd November 1715, detailing his own services during a month's chase of the rebels, and complaining of their inadequate recognition by the authorities. Copies of despatches to the Duke of Argyll, when commanding the expedition to Scotland against the Earl of Mar, from Lord Townshend and Secretary Stanhope, are also among these Jacobite papers, and the extracts given from them in the fol lowing report are of great interest. The first despatch is dated lst September 1715, and the series is continued at intervals of a few days until 2lst February in the year following. Of later date are some curious papers bearing on a project for disarming the High lands, and a very long letter from General Wade, showing the manner in which that part of the kingdom could in his opinion be made secure against future attempts to disturb its peace. Excerpt from The Manuscripts of the Marquess Townshend: Presented to Both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty The following account of the vast collection of papers accumu lated at Raynham by successive generations of the family of the Marquis Townshend is by no means to be considered exhaustive. The papers here described were selected from thirty or forty large boxes chiefly filled with early deeds, accounts, surveys, rentals, 850. Relating to the family estates, which would be of great interest and importance to the Norfolk antiquary and it is possible that in going through such a mass of material some documents of historical value may have escaped notice. More over, previous to the examination of the collection, a selection had been made by Lord Townshend's agent, the late Mr. William Ansell Day (whose kind assistance to and hearty interest in the work of the Commissioners cannot be too warmly acknowledged by them), from the letters, 850. Of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, with a view to publication. The majority of these letters formed the correspondence of Sir Nathaniel Bacon, half brother to the Lord Chancellor, whose estates and papers came by marriage to the Townshend family. The lamented death of Mr. Day has suspended for the present the intended publication, though great progress was made with the arrangement and transcription of the documents but the Commissioners hope that before long some steps will be taken to make this interesting portion of the Raynham collection of manuscripts also available for historical purposes. The Earl, when Mr. Spencer Compton, was treasurer to Prince George of Den mark, and he held in later years a similar post with regard to the Prince of Wales, afterwards George II. The papers and accounts relating to these positions have more personal than historical interest, but they will be found not unworthy of the space given them in the report. Passing by some details of the cost of regimental clothing and the like, we come upon a long inventory of the personal effects of Prince George, a valuation of his breeding mares, stallions, coach horses, hunters, and padds, and of his plate, guns, and pistols; the last article included in the list being a twelve-cared barge. Perhaps the most noticeable fact about this property is that most of it was claimed by various officers of the late Prince's household as their fees and perquisites; thus certain plate fell to the share of Lord Delawarr as Groom of the Stole, all the coaches and horses (the latter valued at 992l.) were given up to Lord Bridgewater as Master of the Horse, and the barge to the bargemaster of the Prince. Some letters concerning the Duchy of Cornwall are best worth attention among the evidences of Compton's second term of office. Excerpt from The Irish Parliament 1775: From an Official and Contemporary Manuscript The Change, however, was not effected until 1767, when the Marquis Townshend, the brother of Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was appointed to the lieu tenancy. Townshend, a keen soldier and an eflicient general, had done good service in Canada, though be excited derision by his vaingloriousness and indignation by arrogating to himself more than his share in Wolfe's victory. He was able and courageous, and was frank and jovial in manner, but his genius was erratic he was utterly deficient in tact and judg ment, and was prone to dissipation. He was sent over to break the power of the undertakers, and form a party under the direct control of the Crown, and to obtain the consent of Parliament to an augmentation of the army. George rightly judged that the military forces of the Crown were too small and as it would have been difficult to obtain a vote for the increase of the army maintained by Great Britain, he desired to raise the number of men on the Irish establishment, the British garrison quartered in and maintained by Ireland, from to and in order to obtain this augmentation the Government was prepared to make certain concessions to the patriotic party in Ireland.
