The Magnificent Bastards PDF Author: Keith Nolan

Category : History

Pages : 468

Book Description
On April 29, 1968, the North Vietnamese Army is spotted less than four miles from the U.S. Marines’ Dong Ha Combat Base. Intense fighting develops in nearby Dai Do as the 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, known as “the Magnificent Bastards,” struggles to eject NVA forces from this strategic position. Yet the BLT 2/4 Marines defy the brutal onslaught. Pressing forward, America’s finest warriors rout the NVA from their fortress-hamlets–often in deadly hand-to-hand combat. At the end of two weeks of desperate, grinding battles, the Marines and the infantry battalion supporting them are torn to shreds. But against all odds, they beat back their savage adversary. The Magnificent Bastards captures that gripping conflict in all its horror, hell, and heroism. “Superb . . . among the best writing on the Vietnam War . . . Nolan has skillfully woven operational records and oral history into a fascinating narrative that puts the reader in the thick of the action.” –Jon T. Hoffman, author of Chesty “Real and gripping . . . combat with all the warts on.” –Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak, USMC (Ret.)

Don't Bunch Up

Don't Bunch Up PDF Author: William Van Zanten

Category : History

Pages : 232

Book Description
As a first lieutenant, Bill van Zanten was a company executive officer in the first stateside Marine unit committed to combat in 1965. A year later, Captain van Zanten was one of the 'Magnificent Bastards' of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, fighting in the boonies near hill 69, outside of Chu Lai. Van Zanten's experience in Vietnam is very different from the pictures made in Hollywood. It had a soldierly professionalism built on sound and rigorous training. Dedication and boot camp forged the volunteer Marines of the early war years, so that when the stakes went through the roof in Vietnam, commitment of man to man and man to unit was total. There was a soldier's intimacy, and a soldier's humour. Together they meant survival, and that is what this memoir is about.

Book Description
In spite of the relatively small number of people passing through its ranks, the Marine Corps produce a disproportionate share of this country’s leaders. It is because Marines are different from the rest of the population. They have a different mindset and handle problems in a different manner. Above & Beyond: Former Marines Conquer the Civilian World profiles 87 former Marines who took that attitude and successfully applied it to the civilian sector. As you read the stories collectively, you will see a camaraderie of many ethnicities, ages, and personalities—some you already know—that make up the U.S. Marine Corps. Read these pages and discover why Jim Lehrer of PBS NewsHour says “There has never been a better testimony to the value of service in the Marine Corps than Above & Beyond.”

Hold High the Torch

Hold High the Torch PDF Author: Kenneth W. Condit
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1787209253
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 716

Book Description
Hold High the Torch, the first of a series of regimental and squadron histories by the Historical Branch, G-3 Division, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps, is designed primarily to acquaint the members of the 4th Marines, past and present, with the history of their regiment. In addition, it is hoped this volume will enlarge public understanding of the Marine Corps’ worth both in limited war and as a force in readiness. During most of its existence the 4th Marines was not engaged in active military operations, but service of the regiment in China, the Dominican Republic, and off the west coast of Mexico, was typical of the Marine Corps’ support of national policy. In many of its combat operations, the 4th Marines was only one element of a much larger force. In other instances, as in the Dominican Republic and China, the regiment was a subordinate unit in situations which were essentially political and diplomatic. Only so much of these higher echelon activities as are essential to an understanding of the 4th Marines story have been told. This is a regimental history and the focus is therefore on the 4th Marines.
