On the 20tli February last, a little boy, 15 months old, while in bis nurse's arias, seized one of the pins which fastened lier cap, put it into his mouth and swallowed it before there was time to prevent him. The pin went in head foremost, and the mother, who ran up immediately, was still able to reach the point with the end of her fiuger. It was one of those large pins the head of which, made of jet, measurea 12 millimeters about half an inch] in diameter and the length is about 7 centimeters 2] inches]. The terror of the nurse and the parents can be imagined. The child experienced no inconvenience. He continued to take the breast and to sleep as usual. Naturally good tempered, he did not lose his cheerfulness for a moment, so much so that were it not for the positive assertion of nurse and mother that one of the two pins of the cap had suddenly disappeared, we should have doubted the fact. It was evident that there was nothing to be done. I merely impressed upon the parents the necessity of examining carefully their child's napkins, and of informing me of the first pain which be should show signs of. Nothing occurred until the 12th June following; that ia to say, nearly four months after the pin had been swallowed. On that day (Sunday) the parents were in the country with the child: and the latter gave evidence of severe pain in the belly; shortly afterwards, slight swelling of the abdominal wall was apparent. His condition was worse on Monday, and on Tuesday the parents having returned to Paris by advice of the local physician, sent for me.
