Book Description
How does one talk about love? Is it even possible to describe something at once utterly mundane and wholly transcendent, that has the power to consume our lives completely, while making us feel part of something infinitely larger than ourselves? Taking a unique approach to this age-old problem, the nameless narrator of David Levithan's The Lover's Dictionary constructs the story of a relationship as a dictionary. Through these sharp entries, he provides an intimate window into the great events and quotidian trifles of coupledom, giving us an indelible and deeply moving portrait of love in our time.

Excerpt from book: cation there is an essential grace that would instantly be missed, and it is their own main security. As for the fairer sex, they may profitably remember ? and indeed should never forget?that dangler is another name for Admirer. ADORATION. The great Doctor Johnson, himself so much of a lover that his constancy under trying circumstances has been imputed to defective eyesight, has the following definitions of adoration: i, The external homage paid to the divinity, and distinct from mem- tal reverence; 2, homage to persons in high place or esteem. It will be observed that in the second definition there is no inclusion of the loved one, whom esteem cannot be intended to apply to; and that in the first the divinity is not a general term, to which any he or she may be allowed admittance. And in defining adorer Johnson showed his own pious understanding of the matter yet more plainly. Adorer, he says, is he that adores; a term generally used in a low sense, as by lovers and admirers. By a low sense the stern lexicographer and tender spouse may possibly have intended to insinuate a meaning of vulgarity. It is more likely, however, that his meaning of low is the broader one which is opposed to lofty; but as in this connection that signifies the Highest, the good Doctor's use of the word is a groan that may be understood without explanation. No doubt it occurred to his pious mind that the profanation that pained him is most common in Christian countries, where young lovers are so persuaded of their dear one's divinity that they would still adore though a wilderness of lexicographers reproved them. Nor are matters mended if there really be something of the nature of religion in this adoring sentiment; as perhaps there is. There is little evidence of its ex...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Lover's Lexicon It is believed that marriage contracted under this strange glamour is rarely as happy as women, in their kindness, are willing to imagine it. According to common observation, when a young wife so married does not walk as one who bears a guilty secret in her breast (as she often does, though nobody can guess what the secret may be), jealousy, of all things, is her constant torment.
