Book Description
"The Long Corner is a riveting read by an abundantly talented writer and storyteller."--Scott Burton, The Los Angele Review of Books "Eerie and moving...compelling...An argument for the necessity of irony, risk and integrity in the production of art as in life."--Will Stephenson, The New York Times Books Review "An enigmatic literary top that continues to spin after the last page...A triumph of sophisticated art."--Steven Kellman, Forward Reviews "Scathing satire...readers will revel in the riotous upending of a self-absorbed personality."--Publishers Weekly It is early 2017 in New York City, Donald Trump is President, and Solomon Fields, a young Jewish journalist-turned-advertising hack, finds himself disillusioned by the hollowness and conformity of American life and language. Once brimming with dreams and ideals instilled in him by his eternally bohemian grandmother, a survivor of the Holocaust who has dedicated her life to passion and pleasure, Sol now finds the senseless jargon he produces at work seeping into all aspects of the world around him. Personal tragedy drives Sol to leave New York and accept an invitation to The Coded Garden, a strange artists' colony whose mysterious patron, Sebastian Light, seems to offer the very escape Sol desperately needs. But the longer he remains in the Garden, the more lines begin to blur--between reality and performance, sincerity and manipulation, art and life, beauty and emptiness--until Sol finds that he must question his past, his convictions, and his very sanity. "Alexander Maksik is a sorcerer of the first order."--Lauren Groff, author of Fates and Furies

Mathematical Elegance

Mathematical Elegance PDF Author: Steven Goldberg
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135150665X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 123

Book Description
The heart of mathematics is its elegance; the way it all fits together. Unfortunately, its beauty often eludes the vast majority of people who are intimidated by fear of the difficulty of numbers. Mathematical Elegance remedies this. Using hundreds of examples, the author presents a view of the mathematical landscape that is both accessible and fascinating. At a time of concern that American youth are bored by math, there is renewed interest in improving math skills. Mathematical Elegance stimulates students, along with those already experienced in the discipline, to explore some of the unexpected pleasures of quantitative thinking. Invoking mathematical proofs famous for their simplicity and brainteasers that are fun and illuminating, the author leaves readers feeling exuberant-as well as convinced that their IQs have been raised by ten points. A host of anecdotes about well-known mathematicians humanize and provide new insights into their lofty subjects. Recalling such classic works as Lewis Carroll's Introduction to Logic and A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper by John Allen Paulos, Mathematical Elegance will energize and delight a wide audience, ranging from intellectually curious students to the enthusiastic general reader.

The Long Lives of Medieval Art and Architecture

The Long Lives of Medieval Art and Architecture PDF Author: Jennifer M. Feltman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351181106
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 359

Book Description
Traditional histories of medieval art and architecture often privilege the moment of a work’s creation, yet surviving works designated as "medieval" have long and expansive lives. Many have extended prehistories emerging from their sites and contexts of creation, and most have undergone a variety of interventions, including adaptations and restorations, since coming into being. The lives of these works have been further extended through historiography, museum exhibitions, and digital media. Inspired by the literary category of biography and the methods of longue durée historians, the introduction and seventeen chapters of this volume provide an extended meditation on the longevity of medieval works of art and the aspect of time as a factor in shaping our interpretations of them. While the metaphor of "lives" invokes associations with the origin of the discipline of art history, focus is shifted away from temporal constraints of a single human lifespan or generation to consider the continued lives of medieval works even into our present moment. Chapters on works from the modern countries of Italy, France, England, Spain, and Germany are drawn together here by the thematic threads of essence and continuity, transformation, memory and oblivion, and restoration. Together, they tell an object-oriented history of art and architecture that is necessarily entangled with numerous individuals and institutions.

Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology

Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology PDF Author: Adrian Room
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786442263
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 187

Book Description
The specialized jargon of some sports can be quite esoteric. Non-Americans, for example, are likely puzzled by baseball terms such as bunt, cut-off man, and safety squeeze, while the non-British may pause over cricket's Chinaman, doosra, golden duck, off-break, popping crease, and yorker. This new dictionary gives the definitions of more than 8,000 terms used in sports and games from around the world, including mainstream sports like basketball and billiards alongside the more obscure netball and snooker. Entries cover sports equipment, strategies, venues, qualifying categories, awards, and administrative bodies, while a comprehensive system of cross-references offers assistance and clarification when needed. An appendix lists standard abbreviations of sports ruling bodies and administrative organizations.
