An uplifting tale of sisterhood, romance and following your heart… Since they were children, Aoife Carroll and her sisters knew they were destined for careers on the stage. But then their parents died, and Aoife took on a role she was totally unprepared for – parent to her younger siblings and breadwinner for their family. She put her acting ambitions on hold, got a sensible job and contented herself with cheering her sisters on from the front row. But when they inherit their great-aunt Detta’s theatre, she’s ready to dust off her dreams and take her place in the spotlight alongside them. Until they go to the reading of Detta’s will and discover she’s left a share in the theatre to her godson Jonathan, who wants to sell the ramshackle building, take the money and run. So unless she and her sisters can sell him on their vision of stardust and magic, they’ll have to find the money to buy him out before the curtain comes down for good on Halfpenny Lane. And as they fight to save the theatre, Aoife also finds herself battling a very inconvenient encore of her teenage crush on Jonathan… Fans of Hannah Ellis and Holly Martin will love this sweet, feel-good romantic comedy.

The Marrow of Human Experience

The Marrow of Human Experience PDF Author: William Albert Wilson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Composed over several decades, the essays here are remarkably fresh and relevant. They offer instruction for the student just beginning the study of folklore as well as repeated value for the many established scholars who continue to wrestle with issues that Wilson has addressed. As his work has long offered insight on critical matters—nationalism, genre, belief, the relationship of folklore to other disciplines in the humanities and arts, the currency of legend, the significance of humor as a cultural expression, and so forth—so his recent writing, in its reflexive approach to narrative and storytelling, illuminates today’s paradigms. Its notable autobiographical dimension, long an element of Wilson’s work, employs family and local lore to draw conclusions of more universal significance. Another way to think of it is that newer folklorists are catching up with Wilson and what he has been about for some time. As a body, Wilson’s essays develop related topics and connected themes. This collection organizes them in three coherent parts. The first examines the importance of folklore—what it is and its value in various contexts. Part two, drawing especially on the experience of Finland, considers the role of folklore in national identity, including both how it helps define and sustain identity and the less savory ways it may be used for the sake of nationalistic ideology. Part three, based in large part on Wilson’s extensive work in Mormon folklore, which is the most important in that area since that of Austin and Alta Fife, looks at religious cultural expressions and outsider perceptions of them and, again, at how identity is shaped, by religious belief, experience, and participation; by the stories about them; and by the many other expressive parts of life encountered daily in a culture. Each essay is introduced by a well-known folklorist who discusses the influence of Wilson’s scholarship. These include Richard Bauman, Margaret Brady, Simon Bronner, Elliott Oring, Henry Glassie, David Hufford, Michael Owen Jones, and Beverly Stoeltje.

The Last Foundling

The Last Foundling PDF Author: Tom Mackenzie
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
ISBN: 1447253264
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
A deeply moving memoir from one of the last children to be taken in by the Foundling Hospital, London. When she fell pregnant in London in 1938, Jean knew that she couldn’t keep her baby. The unmarried daughter of an elder in the Church of Scotland, she would shame her family if she returned to the north in such a condition. Scared and alone in a city on the brink of war, she begged the Foundling Hospital to give her baby the start in life that she could not. The institution, which had been providing care for deserted infants since the eighteenth century, allowed Jean to nurse her son for nine weeks, leaving her heartbroken when the time came to let him go. But little Tom knew nothing of her love as he grew up in the Foundling Hospital – which, during years of the Second World War, was more like a prison than a children’s home. Locked in and subject to public canings and the sadistic whims of the older boys, there was no one to give him a hug, no one to wipe away his tears. A true story of desertion and neglect, this is also a moving account of survival from one of the very last foundlings. It stands as a testament to the love that ultimately led a family back together.
