Book Description
James McNeill Whistler was a leading figure in the revival of lithography in the late 19th century. His lithographs focus upon scenes and themes earlier explored in his paintings, etchings, and pastels. Using transfer paper, he created the effects of drawing, and with a few lines was able to convey a total picture. Working with the London printer Thomas Way and his son T. R. Way, Whistler initially hoped the lithographs would bring him a mass audience and financial security; later he hoped connoisseurs would collect his quiet, understated images as precious objects of enduring value. Steven Block began assembling his important collection in the late 1970s. It includes early experiments, portraits of friends and family, studio models, shop and street scenes, and sketches of the Thames and its bridges.

Book Description
"This project explores the creative processes of the American-born artist, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), as an etcher and printer. A major figure in 19th century printmaking, he created 490 etchings. The evolution of each etching from the copper plate through different states to the final print is investigated, and illustrated. Some etchings were completed at one sitting, others went through twenty states before the artist was satisfied. Over 9500 impressions of these prints have been located and investigated during our research."--Home page of website.

James McNeill Whistler
Author: Margaret F. MacDonald
Publisher: Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
ISBN: 9780300059878
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 642
Book Description
Painter, etcher, draughtsman, lithographer, watercolourist, and author of critical essays and aphorisms, James McNeill Whistler had a tremendous influence on the art and aesthetics of his era. Born in Massachusetts in 1834, he settled in London when he was twenty-five years old and for the next four decades produced hundreds of highly acclaimed (and sometimes highly criticised) works. His prodigious output and proficiency, along with his eccentricities, polemics, and arguments with critics, won him wide recognition. This catalogue raisonne of Whistler's drawings, pastels and watercolours makes available many of his works that have never before been exhibited or published and vividly demonstrates the wide range of his art. His drawings reveal the everyday working out of his ideas and note the world as it passed by Whistler with vigour and humour. The pastels include sensitive portraits, vigorous studies of models in the studio, and detailed views of Venetian palaces. The watercolours, perhaps his finest works, catch the subtle colours of northern skies and ever-changing seascapes.
