The Literary Relations of England and Germany

The Literary Relations of England and Germany PDF Author: Gilbert Waterhouse
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107486572
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
Originally published in 1914, this book examines the mutual influence that England and Germany had on each other in the seventeenth century, the period in which German influence on England, which had been overwhelming, begins to recede and England's influence on Germany becomes much more profound. Waterhouse examines a range of literature, from theology and poetry to satire, in order to demonstrate how the relationship two countries waxed, waned and waxed again. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in European literary history and the relationship between Germany and England.

The Late Eighteenth-Century Confluence of British-German Sentimental Literature

The Late Eighteenth-Century Confluence of British-German Sentimental Literature PDF Author: Xiaohu Jiang
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793618518
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 143

Book Description
The Late Eighteenth-century Confluence of British-German Sentimental Literature: The Lessing Brothers, Henry Mackenzie, Goethe, and Jane Austen analyzes the literary exchange and influence between British and German literature. Xiaohu Jiang focuses particularly on the process of this mutual influence—that is, translation—by observing how the political and cultural imbalance between the British and German literary fields impacted the conceptions, attitudes, and (in)visibility of translators in Britain and Germany in the late eighteenth century. To this end, Jiang carefully reads the paratexts of these translations, analyzing the resemblances between Henry Mackenzie’s The Man of Feeling and Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werther and arguing that The Man of Feeling is a vital source of influence for Die Leiden des jungen Werther. Furthermore, this book also presents an in-depth analysis of Jane Austen’s creative appropriation of Die Leiden des jungen Werther and her oscillating attitudes toward sensibility, which is evidenced not only in her own texts, but also from her brother’s articles in The Loiterer. Scholars of literature, history, and international relations will find this book particularly useful.

Shandean Humour in English and German Literature and Philosophy

Shandean Humour in English and German Literature and Philosophy PDF Author: James Vigus
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351192531
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
"One of many writers inspired by Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy, the German novelist Jean Paul Richter coined the term 'Shandean humour' in his work of aesthetic theory. The essays in this volume investigate how Sterne's humour functions, the reasons for its enduring appeal, and what role it played in identity-construction and in the representation of melancholy. In tracing its hitherto under-recognised impact both on literary writers, such as Jean Paul and Herman Melville, and on philosophers, including Hegel and Marx, the collection reveals that Shandean humour is a Grenzganger - a point of commerce not only between Anglophone and German discourses, but also between literature and philosophy. Klaus Vieweg is Professor of Philosophy at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena; James Vigus is postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of English and American Studies, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich; Kathleen M. Wheeler is Reader in English Literature at the University of Cambridge."
