Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Hannah More, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notices of Her Sisters Induced by the possession of these advantages, the writer has endeavoured to use them faithfully. That he entertains a very high admiration for the character of Hannah More, he has no where concealed; but his oh ject has not been to write a panegyric, but a fair and ao curate record Of facts. Should it seem otherwise to any reader, it should be remembered that several of those who knew Mrs. More best, and who had witnessed her con duct under severe trials, attested that they never had seen so near an approach to perfection. Nothing is here mentioned without authority; and though it is by no means asserted that every minute statement is rigidly correct; the writer, notwithstanding, hopes that such will be found to be the case. The indication of any error he will gratefully receive, and, should another edition be called for, correction shall be given. The materials are principally derived from two sources: private letters and living memories. The writer takes this opportunity of returning his most grateful thanks to the kind friends who have so liberally supplied him. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Mrs. Hannah More, Vol. 1 of 2 It seemed but, justice to this excellent person to say some thing respecting her peculiar title to the veneration of her country, before we entered upon the narrative Of her instruct ive and interesting life reserving the more particular deline ation of her character for the Opportunity which will more seasonably present itself at the close of our record. The same justice also demands that the reader should be forewarned not to expect a hypothetical model Of perfect excellence. NO picture, or exemplar is affected to be drawn; nothing but the sincere life Of a daughter of Eve, beginning her course amid the vanities of the world, and advancing in excellence, under the impulse of extraordinary faculties, but more especially under the guidance of that grace without which all labour is strife, and all prudence folly. Her i1fe and social intercourse will be developed in the cor respondence about to be presented; in which it will be seen how violent was the assault made upon her principles by flat terles and distinctions and how the convictions which religion brings to the conscience struggled with the world, and brought her safe out Of the conflict, into that humble path of moder ation, circumspection, and trust, which made her example so profitable, and her teaching so efficacious. Fierce Convictions

Fierce Convictions PDF Author: Karen Swallow Prior
Publisher: HarperChristian + ORM
ISBN: 140020626X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
With a foreword by Eric Metaxas, best-selling author of Bonhoeffer and Amazing Grace. The enthralling biography of the woman writer who helped end the slave trade, changed Britain’s upper classes, and taught a nation how to read. The history-changing reforms of Hannah More affected every level of 18th-Century British society through her keen intellect, literary achievements, collaborative spirit, strong Christian principles, and colorful personality. A woman without connections or status, More took the world of British letters by storm when she arrived in London from Bristol, becoming a best-selling author and acclaimed playwright and quickly befriending the author Samuel Johnson, the politician Horace Walpole, and the actor David Garrick. Yet she was also a leader in the Evangelical movement, using her cultural position and her pen to support the growth of education for the poor, the reform of morals and manners, and the abolition of Britain’s slave trade. Fierce Convictions weaves together world and personal history into a stirring story of life that intersected with Wesley and Whitefield’s Great Awakening, the rise and influence of Evangelicalism, and convulsive effects of the French Revolution. A woman of exceptional intellectual gifts and literary talent, Hannah More was above all a person whose faith compelled her both to engage her culture and to transform it.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Hannah More, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Sketch of Her Life If however there is too seldom found in the writer of the book, all the humilita which the preface announces, he may be allowed to plead on humility, which is at least comparative. N this ground may I be ermrtted to declare, that at no period of my life didi ever feel such unfeigned difiidence at the ia divi ual appearance ol'even the slightest pamph et (the slendcrness of whose dimensions mi ht carry some excuse for the small preportion of profit or pleasure it convexed) as I now feel at sen ing. This, perhaps, too voluminous, collection into the world. This self istrust may natural] be accounted for, by reflecting that this publication is deliberately made, not only at a time of li a when Iought best to know my own faults, and the faults of my writings but is made also at such a distance from the moment in which the several pieces were first struck out, that the mind has had time to cool from the hurry and heat of composition the djudgment has had leisure to 0 rate, and it is the effect of that Operation to rectify false notions an to correct rash conclusions. He critic, even of his own works, grows honest, if not acute, at the end of twenty years. The image, which he had fancied glowed so brightly when it came fresh from the furnace, time has quenched t the s irita which he thought fixed and essential, have evaporated; many of the ideas which be imposed not on y on his reader, but on himself, for originals, more readin and more observation compel him to restore to their owners. And having detected, from the perusai of abler works, either plaiuirisms in his own, of which he was not aware, or coincidences which will pass for plagiarisms; and lending with the new judgment of the critic the old indignation of the poet, who of us in this case is not angry with those who have said our good firings before us 2 We not only discover that what we thou ht we had invented we have only remem bered; but we find also that what we had believed to be per set is full of defects; in that which we had conceived to be pure gold we discover much tinsel. For the revision, as was Observed above, is made at a period when the eye is brought by a due remoteness into that just position winch gives a clear and distinct view of things; a remoteness which disperses the illusions of vision, ' scatters the mists of vanity, reduces Objects to their natural size, restores them to their exact shape, makes them a pear to the sight, such as they are in themselves, and such as perhaps they have long appeared to all) except the author.
