Book Description
St. Isaac Jogues, S.J. (10 January 1607 - 18 October 1646) was a missionary and martyr who traveled and worked among the Iroquois, Huron, and other Native populations in North America. He was the first European to name Lake George, calling it Lac du Saint Sacrement (Lake of the Blessed Sacrament). In 1646, Jogues was martyred by the Mohawk at their village of Ossernenon, south of the Mohawk River. Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf and six other martyred missionaries, all Jesuit priests or laymen associated with them, were canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1930; they are known as "The North American Martyrs." A shrine was built in their honor at Auriesville, New York, at a site formerly believed to be that of the Mohawk village. Their feast day is celebrated on 26 September in Canada, and on 19 October in the United States of America.

Book Description
The future welfare of both Church and state depends chiefly on the manner in which the rising generation is brought up, for if all parents were to give their children a good religious training, the future prosperity of both Church and state would be assured, because a good religious training will make children good Christians, and, as experience proves, good Christians are always good citizens. In our "Popular Instructions on Marriage" we have briefly outlined the duties of parents in the bringing up of their children. In this little work we enter more fully into details, and clearly point out, almost step by step, the manner in which Christian parents should bring up their children from birth to the time when they embrace that state of life for which God has destined them may this little book prove useful in directing and assisting parents in the proper performance of the noble but difficult task of making their children exemplary Christians and virtuous citizens!

Saint Among Savages

Saint Among Savages PDF Author: Francis Xavier Talbot

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 476

Book Description
Saint among Savages tells the remarkable story of St. Isaac Jogues, a French Jesuit who was killed by Mohawks while serving as a missionary in New France. Coming from a upper middle class life in Orleans, he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a priest and serve abroad as a missionary to risk his life in order to save souls. Along with several others, collectively known as the North American Martyrs, he followed his dreams and met death in the American wilderness. Living with the Huron people in what is now Ontario, he was captured by Mohawk warriors and tortured and held captive for over a year. He escaped back to France with help from the Dutch in New York, and remarkably insisted on going back to New France, even though he knew what he might be facing. Besides Jogues' life there is also a lot of material about the lives and customs of the Native American peoples who lived along the St. Lawrence River.

Book Description
This is an abridged English version of a biography of the French Jesuit missionary and martyr, Saint Isaac Jogues, SJ. Its author, Martin J. Scott, has adapted his version based on the English translation by John Gilmary Shea of an original French biography by Félix Martin, entitled "Le R. P. Isaac Jogues, de la Compagnie de Jésus, premier apôtre des Iroquois" (Paris, 1873). Félix Martin also wrote a similar work entitled "Relation abrégée de quelques missions des pères de la Compagnie de Jésus dans la Nouvelle-France" (1852), which is itself a French translation of a 17th-century Italian historical account of the French Jesuit missions and missionaries in New France by Francesco Giuseppe Bressani entitled "Breve relatione d'alcune missioni de' PP. della Compagnia di Giesù nella Nuova Francia" (Per gli Heredi d'Agostino Grifei, 1653).
